Trinity's Ribeiro, Cardone; Southwestern's Nickell Named SCAC Men's Soccer Players of the Week

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - Trinity's Yuri Ribeiro and Matt Cardone, as well as Southwestern's Matthew Nickell have been named SCAC Men's Soccer Players of the Week with a huge matchup looming between the two squads to decide the No. 1 seeds. 

 

 





SCAC OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Games of October 21st– October 27th

YURI RIBEIRO OF TRINITY UNIVERSITY, a senior midfielder from Salvador, Brazil has been selected the SCAC Men's Soccer Offensive Player-of-the-Week for matches played from Monday, October 21st through Sunday, October 27th. 

Ribeiro led the Tiger men's soccer team to a pair of SCAC shutouts against Texas Lutheran and Schreiner over the weekend. He scored two goals and contributed four assists in the two games, accounting for six of the team's 13 total goals over the weekend.  

Ribeiro had two goals and three assists in the win over Schreiner on Sunday, which marked the second time this season he has posted three assists against Schreiner.

For the season, Ribeiro leads the Tigers with 12 assists, and is second on the team with 30 total points. He has also scored nine goals, which is third among Trinity players on the year. 

Other outstanding performances in the SCAC:
Junior midfielder Andrew Parides of Austin College had a game winner as the 'Roos held on for the 1-0 shutout victory over Dallas. Freshman midfielder Chris Berrios of Centenary College scored the game-winning goal against Dallas on Friday evening and assisted on the Gents' lone goal against Colorado College on Sunday. Senior forward Brandon Ogilvie of Colorado College factored in on both game-winning goals as Colorado College won a pair of road games last week. Junior midfielder Paden Williams of Southwestern scored on goal, a game winner, and assisted on one other as the Pirates went 2-0 this week to move one win shy of tying the SU record for most wins in a season. Dallas, Schreiner, and Texas Lutheran did not nominate anyone.


SCAC DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Games of October 21st– October 27th

MATTHEW NICKELL OF SOUTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY, a senior defender from Aledo, Texas and MATT CARDONE OF TRINITY UNIVERSITY, a junior goalkeeper from San Antonio, Texas, have been selected the SCAC Men's Soccer Co-Defensive Players-of-the-Week for matches played from Monday, October 21st through Sunday, October 27th.

Nickell scored one goal and assisted on one other as the Pirates went 2-0 in SCAC play this weekend. 

Nickell's two shots were both on goal for a 1.000 shots on goal percentage.  That is his third goal of the season and fourth assist from the SU backfield this year. 

Cardone led Trinity to a pair of SCAC road shutouts. He recorded four saves in 135 minutes of action during the weekend, including his fourth shutout of the season on Friday at TLU.  In the TLU game, Cardone recorded three saves to keep the Bulldogs off the board.

For the season, Cardone has now recorded 33 saves and four shutouts for the Tigers, posting a GAA of just 0.49 in his 17 games played.  Cardone has yielded just seven goals in nearly 1,300 minutes in goal, and he has given up just two goals – only one against Division III teams – during Trinity's 13-game winning streak.

Other outstanding performances in the SCAC:
Junior goalkeeper Andrew Celio of Austin College had another outstanding weekend for Austin College, making eight saves against Colorado College before earning his fifth shutout of the season in a 1-0 win over Dallas with six saves. Freshman goalkeeper Rylan Whan of Centenary College recorded his first, career win in the Gents 2-1 victory over Dallas on Friday evening. The freshman tallied three saves in 45 minutes worth of action. Sophomore goalkeeper Ian Horne of Colorado College stopped five of the six shots that he faced to as Colorado College won a pair of road games last week earning his seventh shutout of the season. Dallas, Schreiner, and Texas Lutheran did not nominate anyone.
