AROUND THE SCAC

The Austin College men’s soccer team went 1-1 on the weekend, falling 2-0 to Colorado College before closing out the weekend with a 1-0 win over the University of Dallas. The ‘Roos fell behind 1-0 in the 9th minute against the Tigers and the score went to 2-0 early in the second half, and the ‘Roos were unable to get on the board the rest of the way. Andrew Celio made eight saves in the net for Austin College. Against Dallas, Andrew Parides took a long pass from Daniel Graham, beat a defender and ripped a shot into the upper right corner for what would prove to be the game winner as Celio earned the clean sheet with six saves. This weekend the ‘Roos close out the regular season with a pair of home matches against Centenary on Friday and UC-Santa Cruz on Sunday.

Centenary claimed its first win of the season with a 2-1 decision of the University of Dallas on Friday evening before falling 3-1 to Colorado College on Sunday in a tightly-contested affair. Jeremy Klespis , Chris Berrios and Cole Davidson each tallied goals for the Gents on the week with Berrios and Michael Pullano and Zachary Kidder each dishing out assists. Austin Andrews, Rylan Whan and Chase Duet each saw time in net for the Maroon and White with Whan claiming the win over UD with three saves while Duet was saddled with the loss to the Tigers allowing three goals against three saves. Centenary returns to action on Friday, Nov. 1 as the Gents travel to Austin College.

Colorado College extended its winning streak to four games with a pair of road victories last week. The Tigers used an early goal from senior forward Sean Parham and another dominating defensive effort to record a 2-0 victory at Austin College on Friday.  Colorado College struck for three goals during the first 35 minutes and cruised to a 3-1 victory at Centenary on Sunday. Newby extended his goal-scoring streak to three games when he found the net 17:16 into the game. The Tigers doubled their lead in the 30th minute when Ogilvie converted off of a corner kick by senior midfielder Ben Blass. Ogilvie, who leads the team with 28 points, has been involved in seven game-winning goals in 2013, scoring five and assisting on two others. A little less than five minutes later, junior forward Stuart Beezley bumped the lead to 3-0 when he converted off a pass Parham for his first goal of the season. Horne made a pair of saves for CC, which allowed only eight total attempts. It marked the 14th time in 18 games that the Tigers held an opponent to fewer than 10 shots. Colorado College plays host to Johnson & Wales University on Wednesday at Stewart Field, then wraps up the regular season with a conference match on Saturday at the University of Dallas.

The University of Dallas men’s soccer team went 0-2 on the week in conference road games. On Friday, in Shreveport, La., the Crusaders fell 2-1 to Centenary. Junior midfielder Juan Hernandez-Reyes scored in the contest for head coach David Hoffmann’s squad. On Sunday, in Sherman, Texas, Dallas was bested 1-0 by Austin. Andrew Parides scored the game-winning goal in the 13th-minute for the ‘Roos from a Daniel Graham assist. Dallas will wrap SCAC-play and their 2013 season Saturday, as they host Colorado in an 11 a.m. showdown at Crusader Field.

The Schreiner Mountaineers went 0-2 on the week. On Friday, Schreiner fell to Southwestern University (0-2) and then on Sunday, lost to #10 Trinity (0-6). Schreiner will host Texas Lutheran on Friday, November 1st.

The Southwestern men are just one win shy of tying the SU record for most wins in a season after going 2-0 in game this weekend. The current record is 14, set by the 2001 squad. Southwestern defeated Schreiner on Saturday night 2-0, using  one goal in each half to win the match. The Pirates continued their strong play and scored twice in the opening seven minutes against TLU to defeat the Bulldogs 2-0. Southwestern improves to 13-5-1 on the year and 11-1-1 in the SCAC. They have their final regular season match of the season on Friday, hosting league-leading Trinity at 8 p.m.

The Texas Lutheran men’s soccer team fell to No. 10 Trinity 7-0 on Friday afternoon at Gustafson Field. The Bulldogs fell behind three goals in the first half and couldn’t find a foothold all day against the Tigers. Trinity proved why it’s ranked inside the top five of the Division III NSCAA Coaches’ Poll, outshooting the Bulldogs 30-6 on the day. A pair of very early first-half goals spelled trouble for the Texas Lutheran men’s soccer team in a 2-0 loss at Gustafson Field on Sunday to Southwestern. The damage on Sunday was done very early with Southwestern scoring two goals in the game’s opening seven minutes. The first one came in the third minute and was scored by Paden Williams. The goal came after Southwestern’s Zach Faulkner took a shot that rebounded away from Bulldog keeper Jonathan Michael. Williams picked up the rebound and finished the goal.

No. 10 Trinity recorded a pair of shutouts in conference play to extend the team’s overall winning streak to 13 games.  The Tigers have not lost since opening the season 2-2-1, and have recorded four consecutive shutouts – allowing just two goals overall – during the current streak. Jonny Lawson continued his strong play over the weekend, scoring goals in both games to push his scoring streak to eight consecutive games against Division III opponents.  He has scored 12 of his 13 goals this season during the last nine games for the Tigers. Yuri Ribeiro finished with two goals and four assists over the weekend, and has moved into the top five in school history for career assists.  He is also ranked seventh in career goals at Trinity. Trinity will face off against Southwestern this weekend, which will be a rematch from earlier in the year.  Southwestern defeated Trinity 1-0 in San Antonio, though the Tigers have not lost a game since then.  Trinity needs a tie or a win to clinch the top seed at the SCAC Tournament, held in Georgetown, Texas, November 8-9.
