Men's Soccer Recap (Week 4) - Around the SCAC

AROUND THE SCAC

The Austin College men’s soccer team went 1-1 last week, falling at Colorado College 1-0 before topping the University of Dallas 3-1 on Sunday to improve to 2-1 in conference play. The ‘Roos fought hard at Colorado College, but a tally in the game’s final minutes propelled the Tigers to the victory despite seven saves from Andrew Celio and an outstanding all around defensive effort anchored by the performance of James Saulnier. Against Dallas, Daniel Graham scored and had an assist to lead the ‘Roos, while Caleb Walters and Gideon Ibemere also tallied in the game. This week the ‘Roos head out on the road again to take on Southwestern and Trinity.

Centenary went 0-3 on the week, including a pair of SCAC setbacks at Dallas (1-0) and Colorado College (3-0). Kellan Klaus provided the lone goal for the Gents in the three matches scoring a free kick in the 58th minute in a 3-1 loss to LeTourneau. The 1-0 loss at Dallas, the Maroon and White attempted a season-high 18 shots, besting the Crusaders by four shots in the loss. Austin Andrews was saddled with all three deci- sions on the week recording 12 saves against six goals allowed. Centenary returns to action on Friday, Sept. 27 as the Gents travel to Trinity for an 8 p.m. match.

Colorado College went 2-0 on the week. Sophomore midfielder Max Grossenbacher’s first career goal with 1:29 remaining in regulation gave the Tigers a 1-0 victory over Austin College on Friday night at Washburn Field. Grossenbacher got the first touch on sophomore midfielder Ryan Huettel’s 40-yard volley and slipped the ball inside the left post. Sopho- more Ian Horne made just one save, stopping Haroon Ismail’s drive from 10 yards away with 34 seconds to play to secure his first career shutout. The Tigers finished with a 23-6 advantage in total shots and a 5-1 edge in corner kicks. A pair of early goals and a stellar defensive effort proved to be the perfect combination during Colorado College’s 3-0 on Sunday afternoon. Freshman defender Christian Wulff and junior midfielder Alec Martinez scored 2:27 apart to give the Tigers an early lead and Colorado College recorded its second shutout of the weekend with a 3-0 victory over Centenary College at Stewart Field. Wulff notched his first collegiate goal with a per- fectly-timed header off a Huettel corner kick just 5:28 into the contest. A little more than two minutes after Wulff found the net, Martinez corralled a deflected pass from junior defender Alec Sowers and scored his first goal of the season. That proved to be more than enough scoring for the Tigers, who remain unbeaten (3-0-2) at home this season. Colorado College’s defense allowed only three shots, none of which were on target, while posting its third shutout in seven games. Sophomore Ian Horne was credited with his third career shutout. Freshman forward Caden MacKenzie added a third goal in the 85th minute, converting on a feed from senior forward Sean Parham who had worked his way around the Centenary defenders outside the right post. MacKenzie’s blast from 12 yards out on the left side went off the keeper’s hands and inside the far post. The Tigers finished with a 33-3 advantage in total shots and an 11-3 edge in corner kicks. Colorado College travels to Denver for a non-conference game against Johnson & Wales on Wednesday at 3 p.m. League play resumes with contests at Schreiner Uni- versity and Texas Lutheran University next Friday and Sunday, respectively.

The University of Dallas men’s soccer team went 1-1 on the week in two conference home games. On Friday, in Irving, Texas, head coach David Hoffmann’s squad prevailed 1-0 over Centenary College of Loui- siana. Junior midfielder and co-captain Matt Wise provided the affair’s lone score, a penalty-kick goal in the 32nd minute. Freshman goalkeep- er P.J. Hasson improved to 5-2, notching his first career solo-shutout. Sunday brought Austin College to Crusader Field. Trailing 2-0, freshman forward Barton Holdridge pulled the Crusaders within one in the 55th-minute on an assist from Cole Holleman. It was for not, however, as the ‘Roos claimed a 3-1 decision. Dallas continues conference-play this week with two road games -- Texas Lutheran (Friday, 4 p.m.); Schreiner (Sunday, 3 p.m.).

The Schreiner Mountaineers went 0-2 on the week. On Saturday, Schreiner traveled to Southwestern to record a 0-2 loss. Against No. 25 Trinity on Sunday, Schreiner lost a 0-8 match to the Tigers. This week the Mountaineers will host Colorado (Friday, Sept. 27th) and Dallas (Sunday, Sept. 29th) for continued SCAC matches.

The Southwestern Pirates men’s soccer returned home for the first time since the opening weekend and went 2-0 winning, 2-0 over Schreiner, and 2-1 over Texas Lutheran to remain undefeated in SCAC play. Southwestern scored two goals in the first half in both matches and closed out the game with a great defensive effort. With the pair of wins Southwestern improves to 5-4 on the year and 3-0 in the SCAC. They remain at home to host Austin College and Centenary on Friday and Sunday this week.

The Texas Lutheran men’s soccer team’s undefeated start to the 2013 season came to an end Friday night in the form of a 4-0 road loss against No. 25 Trinity. Texas Lutheran was held without a shot on goal the entire game, while Trinity tallied 11 shots on goal. Overall, the Bull- dogs were outshot 33-8, with sophomore Tim Schaffer leading TLU with three total shots. The Bulldogs dropped another road game on Sunday, losing 2-1 to Southwestern. After getting down 2-0 in the first half, the Bulldogs cer- tainly made things interesting in the final 45 minutes thanks to an Alejandro Martinez goal in the 57th minute that cut the deficit in half. The Bulldogs would continue to push to find an equalizer and mustered two shots and two corner kicks over the game’s final 30 minutes, but their efforts were not enough as the Pirates held on for the win.

No. 25 Trinity recorded a pair of shutouts to improve to 4-2-1 overall and 2-1-0 in SCAC play over the weekend.  The Tigers defeated Texas Lutheran 4-0 to start the weekend, and then finished with an 8-0 win over Schreiner on Sunday. Yuri Ribeiro had five assists over the week- end, moving up to eighth in school history in career points (87). He also moves into the top 10 in career assists (25), and is close to becoming just the third player in school history to reach 30 goals and 30 assists in a career.  The only others to do so were Scott Mury (1996-99) and Alex Woods (2001-04). Trinity con- tinues SCAC play this weekend, hosting Centenary and Austin College on Friday and Sunday.  The Tigers swept the two teams in a home-and-home series last year.  Trinity won 3-0 and 7-0 over Centenary, and took 5-1 and 6-2 wins over Austin
