LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - Playing its first weekend as a member of the SCAC, Texas Lutheran University opened the 2013 regular season with two victories (the only SCAC men's team to go 2-0). The Bulldogs earned wins over LeTourneau University (2-1) on Friday and Hardin-Simmons University (1-0) on Monday.
AROUND THE SCAC
The Austin College men's soccer team jumped out
to an early lead, but Fontbonne University scored four straight on
their way to handing the 'Roos a 4-2 loss in the season opener on
Sunday. Austin College got on the board in the 19th minute when
Andrew Parides scored on a penalty kick to make it a 1-0 game, but
Fontbonne evened the score 10 minutes later. Fontbonne got a
penalty kick of its own in the 32nd minute to take a 2-1 lead. The
Griffins would add one more first half tally to make it 3-1 heading
into the break. In the second half the Griffins extended the lead
to 4-1 in the 85th minute, and that remained the score until Taylor
Greenwalt scored with just 32 seconds remaining to make it a 4-2
final. Fontbonne owned a 14-11 edge in shots, with Austin College's
Andrew Celio making two saves in the net. Austin College is back in
action on Saturday when they travel to Tyler to take on Mary
Hardin-Baylor.
The Centenary men’s soccer team
opened the 2013 season with 2-1 setback to East Texas Baptist
University on Friday evening at Mayo Field. Trailing 2-0 late in
the waning moments of the contest Daryn Beaugh put the Gents on the
board with the first goal – unassisted - of the season at the
89:15 mark. The shot was the only one taken on the night by the
junior and just one of seven shots taken on the evening for the
Maroon and White. Cullen Gallet and Chris Berrios led the Gents
with two shots each on the night as Cole Davidson and Mark Samadh
tallied one apiece. Centenary goalkeeper Austin Andrews (0-1) went
the entire 90 minutes in net warning on five, Tiger shot
attempts.
The result wasn't exactly what he wanted, but legendary head coach
Horst Richardson received a tie for coaching his 900th game at
Colorado College. Despite launching 32 total
shots, including seven on target, the Tigers battled Whitman
College to a scoreless deadlock in the season opener for both teams
on a steamy Friday afternoon at Stewart Field. In his first start,
sophomore goalkeeper Ian Horne had to make just one save en route
to his first shutout. Sophomore midfielder Ryan Huettel nearly put
the Tigers on the board in the 31 minute, but his direct kick from
30 yards out nailed the crossbar. CC finished the contest with a
32-7 advantage in total shots and a 9-4 edge in corner kicks.
Sunday’s game against the University of Texas at Dallas was
cancelled due to the relentless lightning in the area. Colorado
College ventures out on the road for the first time this week. The
Tigers play at Capital University at 5 p.m. Friday, and then
wrap-up the two-day road trip to the Buckeye state the following
night with a 7 p.m. contest at Ohio Wesleyan University.
Dallas men's soccer team (1-0) defeated Fontbonne
University (Mo.) in thrilling fashion on Saturday afternoon in
Irving, Texas. The season-opener did not begin well for the
Crusaders, who faced a 2-0 deficit 46 minutes into the
game. Junior forward Mikhail Castillo deposited Dallas'
first score of 2013 on a 61st-minute helper from junior defender
Amir Nail. Junior forward Nathan Nwaeze tied the game, 2-2 in
the 76th-minute, on an assist from freshman forward/midfielder
Barton Holdridge. Nwaeze scored two goals on the day,
including the game-winner in the 85th-minute from junior defender
James Bernard to dispell the Griffins. Nwaeze is off to a hot
start as he also produced two scores in a recent scrimmage versus
Coastal Bend College. Dallas will return to action on Tuesday at
Crusader Field in a 4:30 p.m. start with LeTourneau University
(0-1). Over the weekend, head coach David Hoffmann and company will
head to Memphis to combat Rhodes College (Saturday, 2 p.m.) and
Hendrix College (Sunday, 12 p.m.).
Schreiner went 0-1-1 on the opening weekend of the
season. On Friday, Schreiner traveled to the University of Mary
Hardin-Baylor and dropped a close match to the Cru, 2-1. Against
LeTourneau on Saturday, The Mountaineers played to a 1-1
tie. This week the Mountaineers will travel to Our Lady of the
Lake on Friday and then take on Howard Payne on Sunday.
Southwestern opened the season at home on Friday, facing
Puget Sound on a smoldering afternoon in Georgetown. Southwestern
took a few minutes to gel, but once they did the Pirates controlled
the game and played most of the game in the attacking third of the
field. After numerous close calls, Southwestern senior Steven
Resnik scored the game winner in the 65th minute. SU then had to
face a quick turnaround as they hit to the road to San Antonio to
play a neutral site contest against Luther College. Regulation
wasn't enough to determine the even-sided physical battle and
Luther came out on top with a goal five and a half minutes into
overtime. After opening weekend the Pirates sit at 1-1 on the
season. They return to action this weekend playing two games in
Abilene. They first take on UT Dallas on Friday before facing
Hardin Simmons on Saturday.
Texas Lutheran men's soccer opened its 2013 season with a
2-1 home win Friday over LeTourneau. TLU's Isaac Lopez scored on a
penalty kick at the 8:49 mark, and Lalo Ramirez headed home a
corner kick in the 80th minute for the victory. TLU sophomore
keeper Jonathan Michael was huge in goal for the Bulldogs. Michael
turned away 10 shots on goal. The Bulldogs followed Friday's win
with another on Monday. Lalo Ramirez scored the game's only goal
and helped Texas Lutheran Men's Soccer to its second straight win
to start the season Monday after a 1-0 road victory against
Hardin-Simmons inside the HSU Soccer Complex. They return to action
on Saturday as they take on Concordia (Texas) at home.
No. 8 Trinity split its opening weekend of games, falling
2-0 to Luther (IA) College on Friday night, then bouncing back with
a 1-0 win over the University of Puget Sound on Sunday night. With
Sunday’s win, the Tigers avoided their first 0-2 start since
the 1993 season, though the team did drop its first season opener
since 2009. Victor Araujo scored the only goal of the weekend
for Trinity, knocking home the game-winner against UPS in the 80th
minute. Goalkeeper Matt Cardone collected seven total saves in the
two games – including five in earning the shutout on Sunday.
Trinity will face Hardin-Simmons University and the University of
Texas-Dallas in Abilene, Texas, this weekend. This will mark
the 12th straight time Trinity has faced these teams during the
regular season, and the Tigers have also played HSU three times in
the postseason during that time. In regular season play, Trinity is
10-0-1 against UTD – including a 2-0 win last season. Against
HSU, the Tigers are also 10-0-1 during the regular season, but just
2-1-0 in the playoffs. Hardin-Simmons won 2-0 in the last
postseason meeting (2009).
