Big Fourth Quarter Propels Colorado College to SCAC Semifinals

SHERMAN, Texas - After Southwestern opened the fourth quarter with a pair of free throws that cut the Colorado College lead to 44-42, the Tigers went on a 16-0 run and never looked back as the Tigers earned a 69-49 quarterfinal victory in Friday's final game of the evening at the 2022 SCAC Women's Basketball Tournament. Official Tournament Website | Photo Gallery  | Postgame Interview

Three different CC players posted double-doubles, led by Rosie Braley with 16 points and 14 rebounds. The game marks the first time in SCAC history that three players from the same team have posted double-doubles in a women's tournament game. Two teammates have posted double-doubles on eight different occasions, with the last coming in 2020 when Southwestern teammates Naomi Brown (10 points, 11 rebounds) and Cecily Woolfolk (10 points, 11 rebounds) accomplished the feat in a loss to Austin College. CC teammates accomplished have only done it once in a tournament game, in 2008 against Centre when Paige Whitney (31 points, 11 rebounds) and Melanie Auguste (11 rebounds, 11 assists) filled up the box score.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The game was tight for three quarters as Colorado College held a slim 44-40 lead heading into the final stanza. At that point, both teams were struggling from the field with CC shooting 30.8 percent and Southwestern 28.3 percent. 
  • Colorado College turned on the offense, hitting on 8 of 14 shots in the period (57.1 percent) and turned up the defense, limiting Southwestern to 14.3 percent (2-14) in the decisive stanza.
  • CC's size eventually wore down Southwestern as the Tigers held a commanding 55-41 advantage on the glass and outscored the Pirates 38-18 in the paint.

NOTABLES
  • Friday’s game was the third time in the last four years that Colorado College and Southwestern have met in the quarterfinal round. CC defeated Southwestern 62-50 in 2019 and, playing as the same seeds as this year's matchup, sixth-seeded Southwestern upset third-seeded CC in 2020, 74-73.
  • The two had split their regular season matchup with each winning on their home floor. 
  • Colorado College has won eight straight games, the second-longest current win streak in the league trailing on Trinity's 22 straight.
  • Southwestern ends its season with a 10-15 record. 
UP NEXT
Colorado College (15-11) advances to take on second-seeded Texas Lutheran University in Saturday's second women's semifinal. The two played two close games during the regular season, with each team winning on its home floor. TLU won 83-82 on Dec. 18 and CC returned the favor with a 67-63 victory on Feb. 6. Tip-off of Saturday's game is scheduled for 7 pm.
