PEYTON HUMMEL OF COLORADO COLLEGE, a senior libero on the women's volleyball team from San Antonio, Texas, has been selected the SCAC Character & Community Female Student-Athlete of the Week for the week beginning December 5.

The SCAC Character & Community award honors the efforts of student-athletes who excel in the field of athletics, and also serve their campus and community.

Hummel is a libero on the CC volleyball team and has been instrumental in the immense success of the team during her four years at the school. The Tigers won the SCAC Tournament twice and finished runner-up the other two seasons. The three-time captain was named to the all-SCAC team twice.

“My favorite memory on the court was winning the 2020-21 SCAC Championship at home during the COVID spring season,” Hummel said. “It was a long hard year and seeing all that work pay off with an undefeated season was really fun.”

She is majoring in sociology with a concentration on health and society, and minors in anthropology and global health. This past summer she was part of the Columbia Summer Public Health Scholars Program, funded by the CDC’s Office of Minority Health and Equity. She helped undergraduate students in New York City interested in the public health field grow their knowledge of public health and working with the different communities in NYC.

Hummel is a SAAC representative and a member of the Community Service committee, which partners with TESSA, working with survivors of domestic and sexual abuse. She also is a Resident Assistant at the school.

“Community service is important to me because I see how giving back to the community has ripple effects that can go a long way, even doing a small amount,” Hummel said. “I feel fortunate to be able to give back to a community that has given us so much.”
