SCAC Shows Well After Day One of NCAA Track and Field Championships

CLAREMONT, Calif.  The 2012 NCAA Division III Track and Field National Championships, hosted by Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges, opened up Thursday. Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) student-athletes produced many quality performances led by sophomore Tiarra Goode of Birmingham-Southern College who qualified with the fastest time in the women's 200-meter dash. Competing in her first NCAA Championships, Goode posted the top 200-meter dash qualifying time (24.00) heading into Saturday's final heat. 

Rhodes College freshman Sadie Yanckello qualified sixth in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:01.38, earning her a spot in Saturday's final heat. Freshman Taryn Burgess of Rhodes also competed in the event and posted a time of 1:03.33 - good enough for 15th in the nation.

Sophomore Elizabeth Krug of Hendrix College, who last year earned all-America honors in the heptathlon, closed out the first day of competition in that event in seventh place. Krug totaled 2,833 points led by her third-place finish in the 200-meter dash where she posted a time of 25.65.

Rhodes' relay teams had an outstanding day of competition. Yanckello was joined by Mary Kate Mullen, Chelsea Temple and Lindsay Svehla in the 4x100 relay and posted a time of 47.25 - the sixth-best qualifying time which earned the Lynx a spot in Saturday's final heat. The Lynx 4x400 relay of Yanckello, Temple, Megan Lee and Jessica Burnam posted the 11th-best time in that event (3:51.02).

On Friday, six SCAC student-athletes will be in action.

Lindsay Svehla of Rhodes will be running in the 100-meter dash prelims, Jessica Thornton of Birmingham-Southern will be running in the 800-meter run prelims, Tiarra Goode of Birmingham-Southern will be running in the 100-meter hurdle prelims, Sally Warm of Sewanee-The University of the South will be competing in the women's high jump, Emily Niehaus of Centre College will be competiting in the women's hammer throw, and Elizabeth Krug will continue competition in the women's heptathlon.
