SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Trinity University Tigers head
football Coach Steve Mohr has received a high honor from the
American Football Coaches Association.
Coach Mohr has been elected the AFCA Region III Coach of the Year,
for the fifth time in his 22 seasons at the Tigers helm.
He guided the Tigers to a 10-0 regular-season record - Trinity's
first undefeated campaign since 2005 - to a 15th Southern
Collegiate Athletic Conference Championship, and to a 12th
appearance in the NCAA Division III Tournament.
The Tigers captured their first SCAC crown since 2007, and played
in the NCAA Tournament for the first time in four years. McMurry
beat Trinity 25-16 in the NCAA opening round, in a game played Nov.
19 at the Trinity University Football Stadium.
Coach Mohr's colleagues voted him the 2011 SCAC Coach of the Year,
marking the 11th time he was the recipient of the conference
accolade.
Since taking over Trinity's program in 1990, Coach Mohr's teams
have posted an overall record of 174-66 (.725), and have amassed a
SCAC record of 90-27 (.769). Beginning with the 1994 season, when
the Tigers earned their first playoff berth, Trinity has chalked up
a record of 164-36 (.820).
He is now tied for eighth place in all-time victories (174) among
active Division III coaches, moving up from 10th. Coach
Mohr stands at No. 20 in winning percentage (.725) in the DIII
active coaches category. He previously was ranked 22nd.
Coach Mohr guided the Tigers to the 2002 Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl
(the NCAA Division III Championship game), and to the national
semifinals in 1998 and 1999.
