Women's Soccer Recap (Week 3) - Around the SCAC

SUWANEE, Ga. - Trinity and Centre have opened up the 2011 season in perfect fashion and are both being rewarded in the national polls ranked sixth and eighth respectively. It marks the highest a pair of SCAC women's soccer teams have been ranked since October 2010 when Trinity and Centre were 10th and 16th in the nation.

- AROUND THE SCAC -

Austin College had a strong weekend, going 2-0 against Millsaps and Rhodes to bring their record to 4-2 overall this season. The 'Roos topped both the Majors and the Lynx by scores of 1-0, with freshman Maya Warnock recording her third and fourth shutouts of the season in goal. Against Millsaps, Ali Ryan found the back of the net off a feed from Tyler Marquez to give the 'Roos the only cushion they'd need, and on Sunday at Rhodes it was Shelley Casey who scored off a feed from Ariel Marder for the lone goal of the game. Austin College is on the road again this week, taking on East Central University on Friday in their only match of the weekend.

Birmingham-Southern played only one game this week, hosting No. 5 Emory University on Friday night. The Panthers lost, 3-0, despite a strong defensive effort. Senior goalkeeper Amber Hernandez made five saves in the loss.

Centre travelled to the College of Wooster this past weekend where they earned a 1-0 victory in double-overtime. Centre will host Spalding University on Wednesday, September 21st, for their next match. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 pm EST.

In second year head coach Kristina Corona's second year at the helm, the University of Dallas women's soccer team (6-1) continues to find the win column. The Lady Crusaders won both of their games played – two road contests -- on the week, defeating Bethany College (Kan.) 1-0 in overtime on Saturday, before knocking off Southwestern College (Kan.) by a score of 2-1 on Sunday. The shutout over Bethany gave Dallas their fifth of the season, and the team has outscored opponents thus far 15-2. On Tuesday, Sept. 20, Dallas will put their three-game winning streak to the test against visiting Dallas Christian College.

The Warriors went 1-1 last week, beginning with a 5-0 win at Ozarks on Monday. It was the third consecutive road shutout for Hendrix with junior Megan Childress in goal, replacing injured senior Allison Mosley. Junior midfielder Rebecca Rahn netted two goals and two assists in the game, and junior Mel Roach had two goals and an assist as well. Junior Morgan Scott scored the other goal and freshmen Emma Paul and Laurie Waters each dished out an assist. Childress had two saves against the Lady Eagles. The Warriors returned home on Sunday and lost 3-2 in overtime to Harding. Freshman Kerry Moon scored on a Rahn rebound to tie the game at 1-1 in the 66th minute. After the Lady Bisons regained the lead in the 71st minute, senior midfielder Hannah McGrew blasted a free kick from 40 yards out that went through the keeper's hands to tie the game at 2-2 in the 79th minute. Childress recorded nine saves in the game.

Millsaps
started their week last Tuesday as they welcomed in NAIA affiliate Belhaven for a night game at Harper Davis Field. The Majors jumped out to a 2-0 lead thanks to goals by freshman Taylor Winslow and junior Susan Harmon. Belhaven responded with two goals in the second half to send the game to overtime. From there, sophomore Whitney Murchison buried the game winning shot in the back of the net with less than 30 seconds remaining in the first overtime to give Millsaps the 3-2 win. The Majors offense struggled the following Friday against Austin College, only getting one shot on goal off and falling 1-0 to the 'Roos.

Oglethorpe
split two nonconference contests this week, topping Spelman in OT, 2-1 and falling 6-0 at Piedmont College. The Petrels Lisanne Edelman converted a corner kick into a goal with a thunderous header for a 1-0 lead that Spelman would quickly equalize. Knotted at one apiece, the game headed to overtime where senior Lexi Vassell netted the game winning goal from 20 yards out. Against Piedmont, the Petrels were blitzed into a 6-0 defeat. The Petrels are now 1-2 on the season and will face Warren Wilson this Saturday at 11:30 a.m.

Rhodes
split the week in non-conference action.  The Lynx were able to come from behind against NAIA opponent Lyon College on Wednesday in OT.  Scoring for the Lynx was Kelsey Keown, Delaney Bracken, and Paula Vasichko.  The Lynx then fell to Austin College on Sunday 1-0.  The Lynx struggled to produce a consistent attack that would generate quality scoring opportunities.  Rhodes travels next weekend to Principia College and also Westminster College (MO).

Overall, the Tigers posted their first two wins of the season after going 2-1 this week. Sewanee earned victories over Covenant College and North Carolina Wesleyan after scoring a combined six goals in those two matches.

The Pirates of Southwestern University went 1-1 this week to move to 4-2-1 on the season. Friday's contest against UC Santa Cruz ended with a 2-0 loss for the Pirates after two fluke goals. The Banana Slugs scored in the opening minutes of the game, sneaking one past the Southwestern defensive line. The Pirates were mounting a strong attack in the second half and seemed poised to score the equalizer until a foul in the box awarded UCSC a penalty kick, giving them a two goal lead late in the game. Southwestern regrouped on Sunday afternoon against Huston-Tillotson, starting the scoring early and never letting up as they easily took the game 6-0. Jillian Curran led the way with two goals and one assist on the afternoon. A constant stream of fresh legs were the key to the dominating win as the depth of the Pirate squad was evident throughout the game and was a difference maker late in the contest. The Pirates have a week off to prepare for SCAC Conference action. They open the conference season on Friday, September 30th at Sewanee and continue the road trip on Sunday, October 2 at Centre.

#6 Trinity
played just once over the past week, earning its fifth consecutive shutout victory in a 4-0 win over UC-Santa Cruz. The Tigers scored two goals in each half of play on Sunday, playing the game at Southwestern University. Emily Jorgens and Stephanie Segovia both scored in the first half, while Abby Loar had her second multi-goal game of the year with two in the second period. The trio have accounted for 20 of Trinity's 42 goals this season. Trinity will again play just one game this week, hosting NAIA school Our Lady of the Lake University on Friday night. The Tigers will play three times next week – including the SCAC openers at Centre and Sewanee next weekend.
