Women's Lacrosse Recap (Week 3) - Around the SCAC

SUWANEE, Ga. - Colorado College improved to a perfect 3-0 on the year including 2-0 in SCAC play after picking up a 16-1 win over Dallas this past weekend. Despite the blustery conditions, the Tigers were red-hot at the beginning of the game, scoring three times in the opening 61 seconds. Junior attacker Frances Staadt needed just 13 ticks to put CC on the board with the first of her two goals, and senior midfielder Grace Maloney added what proved to be the game winner 37 seconds later.

- AROUND THE SCAC -

Birmingham-Southern won both of their games this week, both at home, defeating Aquinas, 15-13, on Monday, and Reinhardt, 12-11, in a double-overtime thriller on Wednesday. Against Aquinas, senior Chelsea Van Voorhis and sophomore Logan Harris led with three goals each. Junior Stephanie Gore led the defense with 10 ground balls and four caused turnovers. Against Reinhardt, Van Voorhis led again with five goals, and Gore led with seven ground balls and five caused turnovers. Junior Alex Smith scored the game-winning sudden-death goal in double overtime. Senior goalkeeper Katie Bates recorded 12 saves in each game. BSC is off for the next week before returning to action on March 21, taking on LaGrange College in LaGrange, Ga.

Centre earned three wins in games played this week to make their record 6-1 on the year, and 1-0 in conference play. Wednesday evening, Centre posted a 19-8 victory over the Aquinas College Saints. Centre controlled 22 of the 29 draws of the evening, with sophomore midfielder, Sarah Mastey, controlling it 10 times. Mastey also had 3 caused turnovers on the night, 4 goals and 1 ground ball. Saturday, Centre played undefeated Shorter University (7-1) in Jackson, MS and gave the Hawks their first loss of the season with a 13-9 win. Sophomore midfielder, Meg Hawthorne, lead the game with four goals and one assist. Sunday, Centre opened up SCAC play defeating Millsaps with a definitive 20-8 win. 9 different Colonels got on the board, with Hawthorne leading the scoring with five goals, an assist, six ground balls, four draw controls, and three caused turnovers. Classmate, Sarah Mastey wasn't far behind with four goals and clocking an assist. Mastey also contributed six draw controls, six ground balls and five turnovers.

Colorado
College turned in another dominating performance during Saturday's 16-1 victory at the University of Dallas. Despite the blustery conditions, the Tigers were red-hot at the beginning of the game, scoring three times in the opening 61 seconds. Junior attacker Frances Staadt needed just 13 ticks to put CC on the board with the first of her two goals, and senior midfielder Grace Maloney added what proved to be the game winner 37 seconds later. After setting up the first two goals, senior attacker Leslie Jacoby scored off a feed from Maloney to give Colorado College a 3-0 lead with 28:59 to play in the first half. Maloney was a force at both end of the field. She scored a game-high three goals, scooped up five ground balls and recorded three draw controls. Jacoby also finished with four points, setting up three goals and finding the net once. Senior midfielder Kelsey Morell, junior midfielder Ginna Oates, sophomore attacker Madeline Scherer and freshman attacker Madeline Pitkin all struck for a pair of markers. Pitkin paced the defensive effort with seven draw controls and six ground balls. Junior goaltender Abby Fink stopped two of three shots to earn the victory. She lowered her season goals-against average to 2.67 and improved her saves percentage to .742. Colorado College returns to action on Sunday, March 18, against Mount Holyoke College in the first of five home games during a span of seven days.

Amid a torrential downpour, the University of Dallas women's lacrosse team (1-2, 0-2 SCAC) dropped their sole game of the week, a 16-1 home loss to Colorado College early Saturday afternoon.

Millsaps
dropped two home contests this weekend as they fell to Shorter University 15-10 on Friday before dropping an SCAC contest to Centre 20-8 on Sunday. After a slow start on Friday night, sophomore Madelyn Walker really did a phenomenal job in goal as she had 12 saves on the day. Jamie Blair Page led the way with four goals and four groundballs while Haleigh Williams added four goals and Kendall Fann added four groundballs. On Sunday, the Majors stayed close with the Colonels in the second half, but it was too little, too late as Centre used their momentum from a big first half to take a 20-8 win. Page had a great all around day as she picked up two goals and an assist while tallying five ground balls. Kenya Strong-Johnston also had two goals and an assist. Defensively, Williams and Fann both led the way with two caused turnovers. Sophomore Madelyn Walker picked up 11 saves in the loss while freshman Nicholette Hannah played the second half and picked up 10 saves. With the loss, Millsaps falls to 1-4 overall and 1-2 in the SCAC. They now hit the road as they travel to Tennessee and North Carolina for Spring Break games. Their first stop is in Athens, Tennessee as they do battled with Tennessee Wesleyan tomorrow afternoon at 4 p.m.

Sewanee
returns to action this week with 4:00 p.m. contest March 12th against Wooster. The Tiger are scheduled to face Greensboro College, Thursday March 15th at 2 p.m. Sewanee will then follow those home contests up with games against Kenyon and the Redlands this weekend.
