Trinity's Loar Awarded NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship

SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Trinity University senior women's soccer player Abby Loar was recently awarded a Postgraduate Scholarship by the NCAA.

Loar became the 34th Tiger student-athlete to receive a Postgraduate Scholarship, and the fourth since the beginning of the 2010-11 academic year. Trinity is ranked in the top-10 for Postgraduate Scholarships among NCAA Division III schools.

Each student-athlete who receives one of the scholarships receives a grant of $7,500.

To qualify, student-athletes must excel academically and athletically, be in their final year of eligibility and plan to pursue graduate study. Student-athletes must also maintain at least a 3.2 grade-point average and be nominated by their institution's faculty athletics representative.

Created in 1964, NCAA postgraduate scholarships promote and encourage education by rewarding the Association's most accomplished student-athletes. Following are the recipients for fall sports.

Loar, who earlier this year was chosen to the NSCAA Scholar All-America First Team after earning a spot on the Second Team last season, led Trinity to a 22-1 overall record, falling in the third round of the NCAA Playoffs at Ithaca College. Loar earned her second consecutive Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Year award as well, scoring a total of 21 goals - eight of which were game-winners.

She is a four-time All-SCAC player, and in addition to her Scholar All-America honors, Loar has also earned All-American honors each of the past two seasons. Loar was a Third Team All-American selection by both the NSCAA and D3soccer.com in 2010. For 2011, she was not chosen as a First Team All-American by both organizations, but she was also voted as the D3soccer.com National Forward of the Year.

During her senior season, Loar became Trinity's all-time leader in career points and career goals, as well as moving into third place in Tiger history in career assists. She is just one of four Tiger players in history to score 50 or more points and 20 or more goals in one season, and she is the only player ever to score 15 or more goals in three separate seasons (2009, 2010, 2011).
