Trinity Men & Women Extend Their Leads After Third Day of SCAC Championships

ROCKWALL, Texas - Trinity University's men's and women's teams extended their leads after the third day of the 2012 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) Men's & Women's Swimming & Diving championships at the Rockwall ISD Natatorium. Results | Team Scores | Official Site

In men's action, Colorado College All-American Jordan DeGayner earned the first NCAA A-Cut of the 2012 SCAC championship as he won the 200 free in a championship record time of 1:38.34.

DeGayner went on to help teammates Kevin Dorff, Jeffrey Nadel and Devin Wahl set an SCAC championship record in winning the 800 free relay. The quartet tallied an NCAA B-Cut time of 6:47.01.

Trinity continued its dominance as the Tigers won four of the seven swimming events on the evening. Trinity picked up wins in the 200 medley relay, 400 IM, 100 fly and the 100 backstroke.

Trinity senior Alex Miranda won his third consecutive 400 IM championship as he clocked an NCAA B-Cut time of 4:03.21. Junior Spencer Bard won the 100 fly with a B-Cut time of 49.63 seconds. Rounding out the Tiger individual swimming wins was first-year swimmer Stephen Culberson. Culberson took top honors with a time of 52.11 seconds.

Sewanee posted the top three finishes in the 100 breast as Phillip Link and Courtland Day each posted NCAA B-Cut times of 57.48 and 57.57 seconds, respectively. Teammate Peter Schildknecht rounded out the top three finish as he posted a time of 58.25.

Colorado College first-year diver Austin Howlett upset defending 3-meter champion Kevin Martin of Trinity. Howlett posted a score of 484.60 to easily outdistance himself from Martin (460.40).

On the women's side, Centre and Trinity each won three swimming events while Sewanee picked up a one win during the evening competition.

The Trinity Tigers won the first three events (200 medley relay, 400 IM and 100 fly). The team of Jennifer Ince, Kelly Holton, Mary Price and Lydia Jones won the 200 medley relay in 1:48.70. Winning the 400 IM was Melanie Gustafson with a time of 4:36.77. Rounding out the Tigers' wins was Price, who posted a win in the 100 fly with a time of 57.99 seconds.

Jones earned an NCAA B-Cut in the 200 free by finishing in 1:53.81.

Centre answered as the Colonels picked up wins in the 200 free (Clark Weber - 1:52.38, NCAA B-Cut), 100 back (Colleen Maggard - 57.30, NCAA B-Cut) and the 800 free relay (Maggard/Weber/Holly Oatman/Hadley Judson - 7:43.55, NCAA B-Cut).

Sewanee's Astrid Escobar gave the Tigers a clean sweep of the 100 breast as she tallied a winning time of 1:04.25. Her time earned a B-Cut as well.

Southwestern senior Sarah Ayers earned another B-Cut as she posted a time of 57.38 seconds in finishing in second behind Maggard.

The Trinity men (717 points) lead Colorado Collegee (487 points). Following Colorado College is Sewanee (436 points), Centre (407 points), Rhodes (208 points), Southwestern (158 points), Austin College (134 points) and Hendrix (111 points).

The women's team scores have Trinity (648 points) leading Centre (484 points). Following Centre is Colorado College (341 points), Sewanee (300 points), Southwestern (286 points), Rhodes (284 points), Hendrix (158 points) and Austin College (97 points).

The fourth and final day of the SCAC Swimming & Diving championships resume February 18 at 10:30 a.m. CST with prelimary action followed by finals competition at 6:30 p.m.
