Women's Basketball Recap (Week 12) - Around the SCAC

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. -- Texas Lutheran not only moved its winning streak to 10 games, but also clinched the No. 1 seed in the SCAC Tournament at the end of the month. The Bulldogs erased a 21 point deficit to come from behind and defeat Trinity in a battle of top teams. Austin College also went 2-0 on the weekend and are one game out of a tie for second place.

 

 

 

AROUND THE SCAC 

Austin College went 2-0 last weekend, earning a pair of hard fought victories with a last second 74-72 win over Colorado College and a come from behind 58-54 win over Dallas. The ‘Roos got a basket by Brittany Stepanski with 3.9 seconds remaining to lift them past the Tigers, and overcame an 11 point halftime deficit in the win over the Crusaders. Jenna Longo and Stepanski each scored 12 in the game with Dallas. Christina Kime averaged 14.0 points and hit 55.6% from three point range, and Stepanski averaged 12.5 points and 7.0 rebounds in the two victories, which gives the ‘Roos three straight wins as they head into the final regular season tilt of the year against Centenary on Friday.

Centenary continues to search for its first win of the season as the Ladies head into the final weekend of the regular season on Friday at Austin College. The Maroon and White posted a valiant effort before falling 63-55 against Dallas. The Ladies placed four players in double figures scoring and three with double-digit rebounds against Colorado College including double-doubles from Briana Edwards and Rebecca Thompson, but it wasn’t enough to topple the Tigers. Thompson finished the weekend averaging 12.5 points and 10 rebounds while Edwards tallied 11.5 points and nine boards per game. Rhonda Martin also averaged double-digits scoring for the weekend with 13.5 points. Centenary will be the No. 8 seed heading into the SCAC Championships and will face top-seeded Texas Lutheran at 2:30 p.m. in the opening contest.

Colorado College continued its run of improved play by earning a split on the road last week. The Tigers erased an 18-point second-half deficit and take a 64-63 lead on Friday night, but Austin scored with a fraction under four seconds remaining to escape with a 74-72 victory. Sophomore forward Danielle Davis paced CC with 21 points. Junior guard Courtney Tyus finished with 14 points to become the 26th player in program history to score 700 or more. Sophomore guards Katie Wirth and Katie Waters added 12 apiece. The following night, Waters poured in a career-high 25 points to lead Colorado College to an 83-58 victory at Centenary. Waters and Tyus combined for 13 points during a 19-2 run that gave the Tigers an 18-point lead midway through the first half, and they were never seriously threatened. Korbyn Ukasick finished with 19 points and six rebounds, while Davis added 18 points and seven boards. Davis reached the 500-point milestone on a layup with 10:18 remaining in the game. Wirth grabbed a career-high 10 rebounds and dished out six assists. Colorado College plays host to the University of Dallas next Saturday in the final home game of the regular season.

Dallas went 1-1 on the week in a pair of conference road games. On Friday, in Shreveport, La., the Lady Crusaders won 63-55 over Centenary. On Saturday, in Sherman, Texas, head coach Jina Johansen’s squad was edged 58-54 to Austin College. In their final SCAC regular-season game of the 2013-14 season, Dallas faces Colorado College in a 2 p.m. MST tip-off on Saturday in Colorado Springs.

Schreiner went 1-1 during the week with a home win over Trinity (77-68) and  a loss to Southwestern (70-47). Statistical leaders for Schreiner are SCAC leader points leader Sophomore Lindsey Peterson (17.3 ppg/6.8 rpg),  Sophomore guard Kelsie Jackson (15.4 ppg), and Senior Bailey Harris (9.5 ppg).  Schreiner will play host to  Texas Lutheran (Saturday, Feb. 22nd) to finish the 2013-14 regular season.

Southwestern moves to 13-11 on the year and 9-4 in the SCAC after splitting games this weekend and are in a three-way tie for second place in the conference.  A big surge at the end of the first half on Friday night sent the Pirates into the locker room up nine after trailing most of the half and SU quickly pulled away with the game in the second half to win 70-47 over Schreiner. Southwestern struggled to get their offense going on Saturday against Texas Lutheran as they shot just 30% from the floor to fall 70-56. The Pirates close out the regular season on Friday at home as they host Trinity in a showdown for the #2 spot in the SCAC tournament. 

Texas Lutheran won both of its SCAC games over the weekend and secured the top seed for the upcoming SCAC Championships. Against Trinity on Friday, TLU rallied from 21 points down in the first half, took their first lead of the game with 1:12 to play, and out-scored Trinity 45-28 in the second half to secure a 74-72 conference win over the Tigers. TLU won its ninth straight game and improved to 18-5 overall and to 10-2 in the SCAC. The 18 wins are the second-most ever in a TLU Women’s Basketball season. TLU fell behind 13-0 and 21-3 as Trinity hit seven of their 12 three-pointers and shot 48.5 percent from the field in the first half. TLU made just 10-of-32 shots in the first half. The Bulldogs finished the final 10 minutes of the game on a 26-11 run and a closed the final 5:24 on a 10-0 run. Against Southwestern, TLU Women’s Basketball won its 10th straight game with a 70-56 home win over Southwestern on Saturday and secured the top seed in the upcoming Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships when Trinity fell at Schreiner. TLU improved to 19-5 overall and to 11-2 in the SCAC. TLU will be the top seed in the conference tournament and will open the tournament on Feb. 28 against the No. 8 seed Centenary Ladies. In the win over Southwestern, TLU opened a 42-20 lead at the half by shooting 43.8 percent and holding the Pirates to 19.4 percent. The Bulldogs led by as many as 25 midway through the second half.

Trinity had its losing streak extended to three games after going 0-2 last weekend at Texas Lutheran and Schreiner.  The Tigers now stand in a three-way tie with Schreiner and Southwestern for second place in the SCAC standings.  Trinity is 17-7 this season, and 9-4 in league play. Trinity led by as many as 21 points during Friday’s game at Texas Lutheran, but could not hang on in the end, as the Bulldogs scored a 74-72 upset win over the Tigers.  The next night, Trinity was unable to bounce back, falling 77-68 at Schreiner. This weekend, the Tigers wrap up the regular season with a game at Southwestern. Trinity defeated Southwestern 81-55 in San Antonio earlier this season.
