Women's Basketball Recap (Week 6) - Around the SCAC

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - Both the SCAC and its schools took some time off for Christmas and New Year's, but the action remained persistent. Texas Lutheran put together an unbelievable week, going 6-1, picking up their first SCAC victory and moving into a tie for first in the standings with Trinity. Austin College added a 3-1 week while Dallas, Southwestern, and Schreiner all had two wins.

 

 

 

 

 

AROUND THE SCAC 

Austin College women's basketball team went 3-1 over the holiday break, winning 57-54 against Hendrix, 71-50 against Oglethorpe, and 55-54 against Emmanuel before falling 74-68 in overtime of the Key Largo Classic championship game against Keene State. Erin Riley was named to the All-Tournament team after averaging 16.5 points in two games in Key Largo. Against Hendrix, Riley had 18 points and 11 boards to lead the way, and Christina Kime scored 15 points and handed out seven assists against Oglethorpe. Riley averaged 15.3 points-per-game over the four game stretch to lead the 'Roos offensively.

Centenary continues to search for its first win of the season. Despite a slow start to the season, the Ladies have received production from a pair of freshmen along with a double-double average from a sophomore. Newcomers DeiAnna Hall and Haley Deshautelle sit second and third on the team in scoring with 11.1 and 9 points per game. Hall has led the Ladies in the last four contests with 13.5 points per outing, including a career-high 22 points in the setback at Hendrix College on Saturday. Briana Edwards has proven a consistent force for the Maroon and White as the Shreveport, La., native paces the squad with 11.4 points and 11.3 rebounds per game. Edwards averaged 11 points and 12.8 boards over the last four games. Centenary returns to the floor when they open SCAC action on Friday at the University of Dallas.

Despite outstanding individual performances from junior guard Courtney Tyus and freshman forward Korbyn Ukasick, Colorado College dropped three games last week. Tyus led the Tigers with 15 points, six rebounds and four assists, but CC dropped an 80-60 decision to the University of Wisconsin-Stout in the 2013-14 New Year's Ball. Sophomore guard Katie Waters finished with 14 points, while sophomore forward Danielle Davis added 11 points and a team-high seven rebounds. The following day, Tyus recorded her first double-double with 15 points and a career-high 15 rebounds, and dished out eight rebounds assists in a 67-57 loss to the University of Northwestern. Davis and Ukasick added 14 points apiece for the Tigers. In Saturday's 68-50 loss at Dallas in Colorado College's SCAC opener, Ukasick recorded her first career double-double with 12 points and a season-best 10 rebounds. Tyus, who also scored 12 points, dished out five assists to climb into a tie for fourth on the program's all-time chart with 225. CC plays at home for the first time in league action when Austin and Centenary visit Reid Arena next Friday and Sunday, respectively.

The Dallas women's basketball team (7-3, 1-0 SCAC) went 2-2 over the span of Dec. 16 through Jan. 5. On Dec. 20, the Lady Crusaders claimed their sixth-straight victory -- to tie the school record -- when they prevailed 69-51 over Oglethorpe University (Ga.) in Irving, Texas. On Dec. 30, the streak was halted, as head coach Jina Johansen's squad was bested 69-66 by Kalamazoo College (Mich.) in Kalamazoo, Mich. On Dec. 31, Dallas was dealt a consecutive loss for the first-time this season, as they fell 68-67 in overtime to the University of Michigan-Dearborn in Dearborn, Mich. The Lady Crusaders opened conference-play versus Colorado College on Saturday at the Maher Athletic Center. The navy and white triumphed 68-50 over the Lady Tigers to get back to their winning ways. Dallas will play at Dallas Christian College (Tuesday, 7 p.m.) this week, before returning home to combat Centenary College of Louisiana (Friday, 8 p.m.) and Austin College (Sunday, 4 p.m.). 

Schreiner went 2-4 over the break with victories at home over Wooster (68-61) and Dallas Christian (77-27).  Statistical leaders to this point for Schreiner are SCAC leader in points Sophomore Lindsey Peterson (17.4),  Freshman Olivia Lott with 6.3 rebounds per game, and Senior Bailey Harris 2.9 assists per game. Schreiner will play on the road this Friday (December 10th) vs. Southwestern and  on Saturday (December 11th) vs. Trinity. 

Southwestern was busy over the winter break, facing four teams and going 2-2 to move to 4-8 on the season. SU kicked off Texas Wesleyan and played well but fell by three 55-52. The Pirates then traveled to Las Vegas to participate in the D3hoops.com Classic, facing Baruch first falling 69-58. SU rebounded well with a 57-51 win over Occidental behind the outstanding player of Jordan Owens. Owens was selected to the D3hoops.com Classic All-Tournament Team after averaging over 20 points in two games. Southwestern took on Millsaps for their first game in the New Year behind career nights from Owens and Chelsea Leeder. Leeder posted a career high 32 points while Owens eclipsed the 1000 point mark for her career in the 78-66 win. The Pirates return to conference action this weekend, opening a four game home stand with Schreiner on Friday and Texas Lutheran on Saturday. 

Texas Lutheran rolled to a 6-1 record over the reporting period and improved to 9-3 overall, matching the second-best start in program history. After a 1-2 start to the year, the Bulldogs have won eight of their last nine contests. In the six-game win streak, TLU has out-scored opponents by an average of 24.3 points. The Bulldogs played their first-ever Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference contest on Saturday, Jan. 4 and came away with a 73-59 win over Scrhreiner. The Bulldogs opened an 18-point lead at the half and led by as many as 20 in the home game. TLU plays its next two SCAC games on the road – facing conference favorite Trinity at 8 p.m. on Jan. 10 and playing Southwestern at 6 p.m. on Jan. 11.

No. 24 Trinity played just two games over the holiday break, splitting games at the Trinity Classic Tournament on December 29-30, and moving to 9-3 overall this season.  The Tigers handed Illinois Wesleyan 86-71 to start the weekend, then fell 58-82 to 10th-ranked George Fox. This week, Trinity resumes SCAC play by hosting Texas Lutheran and Schreiner on Friday and Saturday evenings.  The Tigers defeated Schreiner 79-71 at home last season, as well as winning a 72-48 home game against TLU.
