Women's Basketball Recap (Week 8) - Around the SCAC

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - Schreiner, Southwestern, and Texas Lutheran all picked up two wins over the weekend. The biggest win of the weekend came from Austin College, who went 1-1 on the weekend including ending the 19 game conference winning streak of Trinity. The Tigers still lead the SCAC Standings at 4-1, but the 'Roos are now a half a game behind. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

AROUND THE SCAC 

Austin College women’s basketball team split its two games over the weekend, falling 86-67 to Southwestern before toppling No. 25 Trinity 68-58 behind a 30 point outburst from Erin Riley. The ‘Roos are now 8-6 overall and 3-1 in SCAC play after the pair of road games. Against the Pirates, the ‘Roos trailed by 17 at the half and were unable to claw their way out of that hole despite 15 points and seven boards from Riley, and against the Tigers, Austin College trailed by one at half but Riley scored 23 of her 30 after halftime, including hitting five second half threes and six treys overall to lead the ‘Roos to the win. Christina Kime had 15 and four assists and Brooke Melton flirted with a triple double with seven points, seven assists, and 11 boards in the win.

Centenary fell in both outcomes this weekend and continue to search for the first victory of the season. DeiAnna Hall stood as the only double-digit scorer in the loss at Trinity with 10 points while a pair of newcomers along with sophomore Rhonda Martin posted double figures in the decision at Southwestern. Martin totaled 10 points while Lizzie Moran and Linda Gomez Gil added a team-best 11 points apiece. The scoring performance marked a career-high for Gomez Gil and is the third time in the last four contests in double-digits for Moran. Briana Edwards pulled down a team-best 13 boards at Trinity while Rebecca Thompson and Haley Deshuatelle shared the top spot on the glass at SU with five rebounds each.

Colorado College dropped a pair of road games last weekend, falling at Schreiner and Texas Lutheran. Korbyn Ukasick and Courtney Tyus combined for 31 points, but Mountaineers had four players score double-digit points and posted a 75-63 victory on Friday night. The Tigers took a 19-16 lead after freshman forward Kali Place knocked down a short jumper with 5:21 remaining in the first half, but Schreiner used a 10-1 run to build a 26-20 halftime lead. CC pulled to within 47-41 on a three-point play by Ukasick with 11 minutes remaining, but Schreiner used a 13-4 surge to take a commanding 61-45 lead with 7:06 to play. Tyus also had eight rebounds and five assists. On Saturday night, sophomore forward Danielle Davis recorded 11 points and grabbed seven rebounds, but Texas Lutheran outscored Colorado College 18-4 early in the second half and cruised to a 63-41 victory. Tyus and Ukasick added eight points apiece. With a pair of steals, Tyus climbed into sole possession of ninth place on the program’s all-time list with 138. She needs only two more to pass Liz Kolbe’s 139 (2004-08) for eighth. The Tigers return home next week to play host to Southwestern and Trinity on Friday and Saturday, respectively.

The Dallas women’s basketball team (9-6, 2-3 SCAC) went 0-2 on the week in a pair of conference road affairs. On Friday, in Seguin, Texas, the Lady Crusaders fell 80-67 to Texas Lutheran. On Saturday, in Kerrville, Texas, head coach Jina Johansen’s team was bested 73-65 by Schreiner. Dallas returns to the Maher Athletic Center for two games this week -- Trinity (Friday, 8 p.m.) and Southwestern (Sunday, 2 p.m.). 

Schreiner went 2-0 during the week with a home wins over Colorado (75-63) and Dallas (73-65). Statistical leaders for Schreiner are SCAC leader points leader Sophomore Lindsey Peterson (17.4 ppg/7.4 rpg),  Sophomore guard Kelsie Jackson (13.9 ppg), and Senior Bailey Harris (10.4 ppg).  Schreiner will travel this week to  Austin College (Friday, January 24th) and Centenary (Sunday, January 26th).

Southwestern went 2-0 in SCAC action this week to improve to 7-9 on the year and 3-2 in conference. Friday night the Pirates got out to a slow start but used a huge first half run to overtake Austin College en route to an 86-67 win. SU made a run even earlier on Saturday against Centenary, leading by 20 ten minutes into the game and cruised to a 91-57 win over the Ladies. Southwestern hits the road for the first time in nearly a month to close out the first half of the conference schedule this weekend, facing Colorado College on Friday and Dallas on Sunday. 

Texas Lutheran swept both ends of the weekend homestand, defeating Colorado College 63-41 and dropping University of Dallas 80-67. In the win over Dallas, Karisa Cantu (San Antonio/MacArthur), Taylor Dydalewicz (Dripping Springs/Lake Travis) and Kristen Lye (San Antonio/Clark) each scored in double figures for the Bulldogs. Cantu led the Bulldogs with 17 points, five rebounds and four assists. Dydalewicz and Lye each chipped in 14. The Bulldogs forced 18 Dallas turnovers and held the Crusaders to 31.1 percent shooting from the field. Texas Lutheran held Colorado College to 22.2 percent shooting in the home win. TLU limited Colorado College to 12 field goals in 54 attempts and to 1-of-12 from the three-point line. Bulldog junior center Chelsey Stolle (Falls City/Falls City) blocked a career-best seven shots against the Tigers. The 6-foot-4 post added nine rebounds and two points. Stolle’s seven blocks are third on the single-game blocks list at TLU. Dawn Revels blocked eight shots against Mary Hardin-Baylor in the 1991-92 season, and Courtney Haskell set the current school record of nine against Southwestern Christian in the 2008-09 season. TLU moved to 11-5 overall and to 3-2 in the SCAC with the victory. The Bulldogs’ 11-5 record is the university’s best record through 16 games since the 1997-98 season, when the Bulldogs also went 11-5.

No. 25 Trinity went 1-1 over the weekend, taking a 97-39 win over Centenary on Friday, but falling 68-78 against Austin College on Saturday evening.  The loss marks the first in conference play for the Tigers since the 2011-12 season, snapping a 19-game win streak in SCAC play.  Despite the loss, Trinity remains in first place in the SCAC standings with a 4-1 conference record. The Tigers will face off against the University of Dallas and Colorado College in a pair of road games.  Last season, Trinity swept three games against each team on its way to the SCAC Championship.  The Tigers also edged Dallas in the SCAC Tournament.
