Women's Basketball Recap (Week 1) - Around the SCAC

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - Defending champion Trinity got off to a big start, rolling to a pair of wins to open the season. Austin College came from behind to start the year 1-0 while Schreiner, Southwestern, and Texas Lutheran all started the year 1-1 on opening weekend.

 

 

 

 

AROUND THE SCAC 

The Austin College women’s basketball team fell in a 14 point hole midway through the first half but battled all the way back and managed to hold off Mary Hardin-Baylor 76-74 on the road on Saturday in the season opener for the ‘Roos. Erin Riley knocked down 4-of-5 threes on her way to 16 points and six rebounds to lead the ‘Roos and Christina Kime added 16 points, four boards, and two assists. Brittany Stepanski scored 15 points and added five rebounds, and Brooke Melton scored eight points, including the two game winning free throws with 19 seconds left, and also blocked a last second three point attempt by UMHB. This week the ‘Roos host the Bob Mason Classic on Friday and Saturday.

Centenary women’s basketball team opened the season with a 101-57 loss at the University of Texas at Tyler on Saturday afternoon. A trio of Ladies scored in double figures led by 12 points from DeiAnna Hall and Briana Edwards. The mark is a career-high for Hall in her debut. Edwards also paced the Maroon and White on the glass with seven rebounds. Rhonda Martin chimed in 10 points to assist in the scoring effort. Centenary opens the home slate against cross-town rival Louisiana State University-Shreveport on Tuesday, Nov. 19. Tip is slated for 5:30 p.m.

Despite double-figure scoring by sophomore guard Katie Wirth and junior guard Courtney Tyus, Colorado College opened its 2013-14 season with a 74-59 loss to St. Olaf College on Friday evening. Wirth led the Tigers with a career-high 15 points, on 5-of-6 shooting from the floor and 4-for-6 from the free-throw line. Tyus, a third-year starter, scored 14 points and added two steals and two assists. With the score tied 27-27 with just under three minutes to play, the Oles closed out the half with an 8-0 run to take a 35-27 lead at intermission and never looked back. In only her second collegiate game, freshman forward Korbyn Ukasick gave CC a glimpse of what she can provide in the future. Ukasick led the Tigers with 14 points and eight rebounds, but Occidental College pulled away in the second half for a 67-57 victory on Sunday. Freshman guard Esra Siddeek scored eight of her 11 points during the first half to help Colorado College take a 32-31 lead after 20 minutes. CC pulled to within 58-55 on a pair of free throws by sophomore forward Danielle Davis with 2:21 left, but Occidental scored a pair of uncontested layups and sealed the game by making five of six free throws during the final minute. The Tigers head out on the road for the first time next week for three games in Southern California, beginning with a date at California Lutheran University on Thursday, Nov. 21.

The Dallas women’s basketball team (0-1) tipped-off their 2013-14 season with a 56-47 loss to LeTourneau University on Friday night at the Maher Athletic Center. Trailing 50-38 with 1:39 remaining, the Lady Crusaders reeled-off seven-unanswered points in 20 seconds of clock to pull within five. The Lady Yellow Jackets, however, outscored Dallas 4-2 over the final 1:19 to secure a nine-point victory. This week, Jina Johansen’s squad will compete in the Austin College Invitational -- University of the Ozarks-Ark. (Saturday, 2 p.m.). 

Schreiner went 1-1 on the week opening their season with a 70-63 loss to Concordia (TX), but followed that up with a 68-57 victory over Dallas Christian to get first year Head Coach Temaine Wright his first win. Schreiner will pick things up this weekend against St. Thomas on Friday in Houston

Southwestern opened the season by hosting the Tipoff Tournament. Friday, the Pirates opened against Hardin Simmons University and got off to a shaky start, trailing by 14 at halftime. A huge second half run allowed the Pirates to get back in the game and take the lead for the first time with 12 minutes remaining. Southwestern never trailed again as they earned their first win 87-78. It was all Moravian on day two, however, as Southwestern was never able to get a run going for the lead. Moravian shot over 60% from three point range most of the first half and held a comfortable lead in the second half despite SU’s push. Southwestern starts 1-1 on the year after the weekend and hit the road to face Concordia University on Friday evening. 

Texas Lutheran opened their 2013-14 season with a 1-1 road trip to Dallas. The Bulldogs won 85-62 on Friday evening against Dallas Christian and dropped a 69-58 contest to former conference foe University of Texas at Dallas. TLU took defending American Southwest Conference champion UT Dallas into the final few minutes with the game still in the balance. TLU guard Karisa Cantu scored 17 and hit seven of her seven free throw attempts. She added five rebounds, an assist and two steals. ... Against Dallas Christian, Taylor Dydalewicz led all scorers with 18. She added five rebounds, two steals and an assist. She hit six of her 10 shots. ...The Bulldogs held Dallas Christian to 31.3 percent shooting. ... The Bulldogs hit the road to Edinburg, Texas for Tuesday’s non-conference game with NCAA Division I opponent University of Texas at Pan American. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.

No. 19 Trinity opened its season with a pair of wins at the Southwestern University Tip-Off Tournament over the weekend, defeating both Moravian College and Hardin-Simmons University. The Tigers began the season with a 69-50 win over Moravian on Friday night, despite shooting 33.8% from the field in the game.  Trinity followed that with an 84-62 win over Hardin-Simmons, and the offense improved to nearly 50% shooting in the second game. Trinity is now 4-3 against Hardin-Simmons over the past eight seasons, and the Tigers split a pair of games with the Cowgirls last year. Trinity will host a pair of games this week, opening a stretch that includes five home games in the next six contests for the Tigers.  Trinity takes on Wayland Baptist University on Tuesday evening, then hosts UT-Dallas on Thursday.
