Women's Basketball Recap (Week 4) - Around the SCAC

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - The University of Dallas charged into second place with three wins on the week to move their winning streak to four games. Trinity added a 2-1 weekend against stiff competition including their first SCAC victory of the year. Schreiner also added a victory to move to .500 early in the year.

 

 

 

 

 

AROUND THE SCAC 

Austin College was isle on the weekend as their games against Centenary and Millsaps were cancelled due to icy conditions in North Texas. No make up date have been announced. Austin College will take on Rhodes Sunday in Memphis.

Centenary's lone contest of the week was postponed as the Ladies were set to host Austin College in the SCAC opener. Briana Edwards and Haley Deshautelle are averaging double figures scoring for the Maroon and White. Edwards leads the way with 11.8 points per game while Deshautelle is averaging 10.4 per contest. Edwards also paces the Ladies on the glass with 9.8 rebounds per outing. Centenary returns  to the floor on Monday, Dec. 16 as they host Rhodes College at 3 p.m.

Junior guard Courtney Tyus nearly recorded a triple double, but Colorado College dropped an 86-69 decision to Johnson & Wales University in its only game last week. Tyus grabbed a career-high 10 rebounds, tied her season of high of nine assists and added nine points. She became the eighth player in program history to record 200 or more career assists and now ranks sixth with 208. Tyus leads the conference averaging 5.1 assists per game. The Wildcats connected on 10 of 27 shots from 3-point range and CC was unable to match their red-hot shooting. Freshman forward Korbyn Ukasick reached double-figure points for the fifth time in eight games and led the Tigers with 17 points. Sophomore guard Katie Wirth scored 14 points for Colorado College, while sophomore forward Danielle Davis added 13 before fouling out with 58 seconds to play.  Sophomore guard Katie Waters hit all seven of her free throws and finished with 11 points. The Tigers are idle until Dec. 31 when they welcome the University of Northwestern, St. Joseph's College and the University of Wisconsin-Stout to Reid Arena for the 2013-14 New Year's Ball. 

The Dallas women's basketball team (4-1) boasts a four-game winning-streak, following a 3-0 week. On Tuesday, in Irving, Texas, the Lady Crusaders won 90-66 over Dallas Christian College. On Thursday, in Arlington, Texas, head coach Jina Johansen's squad claimed a 76-62 victory over Arlington Baptist College. On Saturday, at the Maher Athletic Center, Dallas trekked to a 68-64 triumph over Millsaps College (Miss.). The navy and white will play just once this week, a 7 p.m. tilt on Wednesday with Southwestern Adventist University in Keene, Texas. 

Schreiner went 1-0 on the week with a road win against Huston-Tillotson (74-67). Sophomore Lindsey Peterson  leads the Mountaineers and the SCAC with 17.8 points/game. Freshman Olivia Lott leads the team with 8.3 rebounds/game, white senior Bailey Harris dishes 3.2 assists/game. Schreiner will be idle this week, but will play on the road next Monday, December 16th vs. Angelo State.

Southwestern was held to 18 points below their average as they dropped their conference opener to Trinity 81-55 on Wednesday night. SU did post an impressive 21 offensive rebounds in the loss and outrebounded TU 46-41 on the evening. Annie Bourne continued her dominance with 16 points and 13 rebounds, posting her third consecutive double-double. Chelsea Leeder added in 13 points and Audrey Garcia 11. The loss drops Southwestern to 2-5 on the year and 0-1 in the SCAC. SU returns home for their next game, facing former SCAC opponent Rhodes on December 14th at 5 p.m.

Texas Lutheran was idle this weekend as their matchup against Dallas Christian was postponed due to icy conditions in North Texas. No makeup date has been announced for this game. 

No. 22/24 Trinity went 2-1 over the past week, improving the team's overall record to 8-2 on the season.  The Tigers opened the week with an 81-55 win over Southwestern in the first SCAC game of the season, then went 1-2 at the McWilliams Classic, hosted by Washington (MO) University. Trinity defeated UC-Santa Cruz 65-54 to reach the tournament championship game against the second-ranked hosts, but Washington earned the 67-59 win to snap Trinity's five-game win streak. Murphy Burns led three Tigers in double figures against Southwestern, scoring 22 points to go with a team-best eight rebounds. Libby Kruse was the star of the show against the Banana Slugs, as she posted 14 points, five assists, and an astounding 20 rebounds to pace the Tiger attack.  Hannah Coley hit Washington with 23 points and seven assists to lead Trinity in the weekend finale. Trinity is off until the end of the month, when the Tigers will host the Trinity Christmas Classic December 28-30.  Trinity will face Illinois Wesleyan and George Fox in the tournament, which will start a string of six consecutive home games for the Tigers.
