Women's Basketball Recap (Week 9) - Around the SCAC

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - Trintiy improved to 6-1 in the SCAC as they continue to sit on top of the SCAC. Texas Lutheran overtook second place after a 2-0 weekend including a win over Austin College. Dallas pulled off an upset, knocking off Southwestern at home as they look to climb the SCAC Standings.



 

 

AROUND THE SCAC 

Austin College women's basketball team split its two games over the weekend, topping Schreiner 57-48 before falling 64-53 to Texas Lutheran on Sunday afternoon. Erin Riley had another big weekend for the 'Roos with a pair of double-doubles, scoring 24 and grabbing 10 rebounds against Schreiner and following that up with 17 points and 11 boards against TLU. Christina Kime scored a game-high 18 in the loss to TLU, and Brittany Stepanski added 10. Against Schreiner, Riley knocked down 5-of-6 three pointers as the only 'Roo in double-figures in the scoring column. Brooke Melton added 10 boards and handed out five assists against Texas Lutheran.

Centenary dropped two SCAC contests over the weekend with losses to Texas Lutheran and Schreiner University. Briana Edwards led the Ladies with 15 points against Schreiner while Haley Deshautelle grabbed a team-best seven rebounds. Rebecca Thompson paced the Maroon and White with 13 points and 12 rebounds for her first, career double-double. The Benton, La., native's 13 points were tied for tops on the team with DeiAnna Hall while her 12 boards led the team. Lizzie Moran added 10 points while Briana Edwards pulled down 10 rebounds. Centenary returns to action this weekend as the Ladies travel to TLU and Schreiner for rematches of this weekend's contest.

Junior guard Courtney Tyus continued her climb in the Colorado College record book, but the Tigers dropped all three of their games last week. During Friday's 78-67 loss to Southwestern, Tyus recorded team highs of 18 points, nine rebound rebounds to help keep CC within striking distance. She climbed into third place on the program's career assist chart with 253, surpassing Annie Hull's (1989-92) total of 247, and cracked the program's top 30 in career rebound, finishing the game ranked No. 29 with 314. Sophomore forward Danielle Davis finished with 14 points, four rebounds and four steals. Freshman forward Korbyn Ukasick added 13 points, while sophomore guard Katie Waters chipped in 10 points. The following day, Colorado College stayed with Trinity during the final 20 minutes, but was unable to overcome a 16-point first-half deficit and dropped a 76-59 decision. Tyus finished with 15 points, seven assists and five steals for the Tigers. Ukasick recorded double-figure points for the 13th time this season with 15, while Davis posted 12 points and six rebounds. CC began the week with an 85-71 setback at Johnson & Wales University. Colorado College returns to Texas next weekend for rematches with Southwestern University and Trinity on Friday and Saturday, respectively.

The Dallas women's basketball team (10-7, 3-4 SCAC) went 2-1 on the week. On Monday, in Oklahoma City, Okla., the Lady Crusaders won 86-62 over Hillsdale Free Will Baptist College (Okla.). On Friday, in Irving, Texas, the navy and white were bested 85-69 by Trinity. On Sunday, at the Maher Athletic Center, head coach Jina Johansen's squad prevailed 68-65 in overtime against Southwestern. Dallas takes to the road this week to battle Trinity (Friday, 8 p.m.) and Southwestern (Sunday, 6 p.m.). 

Schreiner went 1-1 during the week on the road with a loss to Austin College (48-57) and a victory over Centenary (75-54). Statistical leaders for Schreiner are SCAC leader points leader Sophomore Lindsey Peterson (17.6 ppg/7.6 rpg), Sophomore guard Kelsie Jackson (13.4 ppg), and Senior Bailey Harris (10.1 ppg).  Schreiner will play host this week to  Austin College (Friday, January 31st) and Centenary (Saturday, February 1st).

Southwestern went 1-1 on the toughest road trip of the season to close the first half of the SCAC conference schedule. Southwestern sits at 8-10 on the year and 4-3 in conference play. Chelsea Leeder posted a huge first half as the Pirates built and early lead and cruised the a 78-67 win over Colorado College on Friday night. 40 minutes weren't enough on Sunday as SU found themselves in a battle with the University of Dallas. In the end UD emerged with the win, 68-65. The Pirates host Colorado and UD at home this weekend to kick off round two of conference action. 

Texas Lutheran posted a pair of SCAC road wins over the weekend. In Centenary's Gold Dome on Friday, TLU junior point guard Karisa Cantu scored 14 points, dished out four assists, collected four rebounds and tallied a pair of steals. Cantu was one of three Bulldogs to hit double figures in scoring. Freshman guard/forward Savannah Hight added 11 points and four rebounds, and sophomore forward Taylor Dydalewicz contributed 10 points. Bulldog center Chelsey Stolle collected nine rebounds, eight points and three blocks. On Sunday, the Bulldogs secured a 64-53 victory over the Austin College Kangaroos. Already off to the best start in TLU's NCAA Division III women's basketball history, the Bulldogs added another victory in 2013-14 and improved to 13-5 overall and to 5-2 in the SCAC. The 13 wins are the most by a TLU women's basketball squad in the university's NCAA DIII era, which officially began in 2002-03. (The Bulldogs began the transition from NAIA/NCAA DII in 1999-00 and became full members of NCAA DIII in 2002-03.). TLU sits a half-game behind Trinity (14-4, 6-1) in the SCAC race for the post-season tournament's top seed. In Austin College's Hughey Gymnasium, the Bulldogs held the Kangaroos to 21.1 percent shooting in the first half and to 32.6 percent for the game. TLU led 28-20 at the break.

Trinity won for the fifth time in its last six games over the weekend, defeating both the University of Dallas and Colorado College on the road.  The Tigers beat Dallas 85-69 on Friday, then finished with a 76-59 win over Colorado on Saturday. With the wins, Trinity remains in the lead in the SCAC standings by a game over Texas Lutheran University. This weekend, Trinity will host both Dallas and Colorado in a rematch with the team's most recent opponents.  The Tigers face Dallas on Friday night, followed by a Saturday evening game against Colorado.  The games will mark the final regular season home contests for Trinity, though the team will host the SCAC Tournament at the end of February.
