LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. -Southwestern University junior forward Jordan Owens and Texas Lutheran University junior guard Karisa Cantu have been named SCAC Women's Basketball Player of the Week for their efforts this past weekend. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

SCAC CO-PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
Games of  December 16th – January 5th

JORDAN OWENS OF SOUTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY, a junior forward from Richardson, Texas, and KARISA CANTU OF TEXAS LUTHERAN UNIVERSITY, a junior guard from San Antonio, Texas, have been selected the SCAC Women’s Basketball Players-of-the-Week for games played from Monday, December 16th through Sunday, January 5th.

Owens was a monster over the break, averaging 21.5 points per game while shooting 51% from the floor (29-56) and 42% form three point range (6-14), 78% (22-28) from the free throw line. She also averaged 6.8 rebounds per game and had five steals. 

Over the break, Owens eclipsed the 1000 point mark for her career and was the leading scorer in three of the four games with 25 points against Baruch, 23 points against Occidental and 18 against Texas Wesleyan. 

Owens was a D3hoops.com Classic All-Tournament Team selection and was named to the D3hoops.com Team of the Week for her play in Las Vegas. 

Cantu propelled the Bulldogs to a 6-1 record over the reporting period by averaging 14.1 points, 5.1 rebounds and 4.9 assists. 

Cantu scored a season-high 22 points in the home loss to NAIA school St. Ambrose (Iowa), added 20 points in a road win over NAIA school Northwood, and posted a triple-double in TLU’s SCAC-opening win over Schreiner. 

In the victory over the Mountaineers, Cantu scored 13 points, dished out 10 assists and grabbed 11 rebounds. 

Cantu and the Bulldogs, at 9-3 overall, are off to the second-best start in program history. The Bulldogs’ six-game win streak is the longest for the program since the 1984-85 season. 

Other outstanding performances in the SCAC:
Senior guard/forwaf Erin Riley of Austin College had a strong winter break in leading the ‘Roos to three wins in four games, averaging 15.3 points and 7.8 rebounds per game, including an 18 point, 11 rebound effort against Hendrix and an 18 point effort in the championship of the Key Largo Classic in an overtime loss to Keene State. Freshman guard DeiAnna Hall of Centenary led the Ladies in the last four contests with 13.5 points per outing, including a career-high 22 points in the setback at Hendrix College on Saturday. Junior guard Courtney Tyus of Colorado College averaged 14.0 points, 7.7 rebounds and 5.7 assists during Colorado Colleges three games last week. Junior guard Marleyna Bustamante of Dallas scored 11, 28, 16 and 5 to lead the Crusaders to a 2-2 weekend including their first conference win over Colorado College. Junior forward Lindsey Peterson of Schreiner led the Mountaineers to a 2-4 break with 17 ppg and 39 rebounds. She had 24 points, 13 rebounds, and 5 blocks against East Texas Baptist. Senior guard Murphy Burns of Trinity averaged 19.0 points/game and 4.5 assists/game for the weekend, hitting 14-30 (46.7%) from the field and all six of her free throw attempts.  She scored 20 points to go with eight assists in the team’s win over Illinois Wesleyan, then had 18 points on 6-6 free throws against George Fox.
