Women's Basketball Recap (Week 7) - Around the SCAC

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - It was the first full weekend of SCAC action and Trinity and Austin College found themselves the big winners, both winning two games to move into the top two places in the SCAC Standings. Meanwhile, huge performances led to conference victories for Colorado College, Dallas, Schreiner, and Southwestern.

 

 

 

 

 

AROUND THE SCAC 

Austin College improved to 7-5 overall with a pair of wins in the team’s first two SCAC games of the season, as the ‘Roos topped Colorado College 70-60 and the University of Dallas 68-56. Christina Kime had a big weekend for Austin College, averaging 22.5 points, 6.5 rebounds, and 4.0 assists while shooting better 52% from the field and 45% from three. Brittany Stepanski also had a strong pair of games, boasting averages of 14.5 points and 6.5 rebounds, and Erin Riley added 11.0 points and 6.5 boards.

Centenary went 0-2 on the week to open SCAC action. The Ladies got great effort from freshman Lizzie Moran who led the Maroon and White in scoring during both contests. Moran tallied a career-high 23 points in the setback at Dallas and followed with 14 points at Colorado College. Briana Edwards continued her pace averaging a double-double for the weekend. The Shreveport, La., native tallied 10 points in each outing and grabbed a total of 22 rebounds during the span. Centenary returns to action on Friday, Jan. 17 as they travel to Trinity University.

Freshman forward Korbyn Ukasick poured in a season-high 18 points, but  Colorado College dropped a 70-60 decision to Austin on Friday night. Junior guard Courtney Tyus came close to posting her second double-double in the last three games, finishing with 14 points and nine rebounds. Trailing by as many as seven points early in the second half, the Tigers trimmed their deficit to 47-44 on a pair of Tyus free throws with 11:44 remaining in the game, but that proved to be as close as CC would get. Sophomore forward Danielle Davis added nine points and eight rebounds. Four Tigers registered double-digit points and a pair grabbed double-figure rebounds as Colorado College rolled to a 73-54 victory over Centenary on Sunday afternoon at Reid Arena. Tyus recorded a game-high 16 points and Davis recorded her first career double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds to help the Tigers post their first triumph of the season. Ukasick finished with 12 points, her ninth game of the season in double figures, while sophomore guard Katie Wirth added 10 more. Sophomore guard Katie Waters set a career high with 10 boards. CC owned the lead virtually the entire game, except for 39 seconds during which the score was tied in the opening two minutes. Centenary got to within four points 2:36 into the second half, but Colorado College used an 11-2 surge during the ensuing 3:21 to push its advantage to 13 points with 14:03 remaining. The Tigers put the game away with a 12-2 run culminating with a 3-pointer from Davis that gave her team a 59-40 lead with 7:34 to play. Next on the agenda is CC’s first-ever SCAC games at Schreiner and Texas Lutheran on Friday and Saturday, respectively.

The Dallas women’s basketball team went 2-1 on the week. On Tuesday, in Farmers Branch, Texas, the Lady Crusaders won 90-76 over Dallas Christian College. On Friday, in Irving, Texas, head coach Jina Johansen’s squad returned to conference-play with a 74-61 victory over Centenary. On Sunday, at the Maher Athletic Center, the navy and white fell 68-56 to Austin College. Dallas has two road games on the docket this week -- Texas Lutheran (Friday, 8 p.m.) and Schreiner (Sunday, 6 p.m.). 

Schreiner went 1-1 during the week with a road win over Southwestern (79-69) and loss to Trinity (52-75). Statistical leaders to this point for Schreiner are SCAC leader points leader Sophomore Lindsey Peterson (17.6 ppg/7.4 rpg),  Sophomore guard Kelsie Jackson (13.1 ppg), and Senior Bailey Harris (10.1 ppg).  Schreiner will host Colorado College this Friday (December 17th) and Dallas on Saturday (December 18th).

Southwestern returned to SCAC conference action at home this weekend, taking on Schreiner and Texas Lutheran. The Pirates were sluggish on Friday and weren’t able to get a run together as Schreiner upset the Pirates 79-69. SU returned to form and posted their largest point total of the season so far with a 92-82 win over Texas Lutheran. Southwestern scored 53 second half points and shot 56.4% from the floor in the win. The Pirates move to 5-9 after the weekend and 1-2 in the SCAC. They remain at home to face Austin College and Centenary this weekend. 

Texas Lutheran had their six-game win streak snapped with a six-point loss at Trinity, and the Bulldogs dropped to 1-2 in the SCAC with a 10-point loss at Southwestern. TLU held a seven-point lead in the first half and a six-point lead in the second half against Trinity. Trinity held TLU to 19-of-82 (23.2 percent) shooting for the entire game. In the second half, TLU’s shooting woes dipped to 8-of-46 (17.4 percent). The Bulldogs missed 63 total shots against the Tigers. After going 0-for-12 from the arc in the first half against Southwestern, TLU hit 11 of 16 long-range shots in the second half. The Bulldogs put five players in double figures. Freshman forward Savannah Height (San Antonio/Brandeis) led TLU with 19 points. She hit three three-pointers and eight of her 13 shot attempts. The Bulldogs continue SCAC play with a pair of home games Friday and Saturday against the University of Dallas and Colorado College, respectively. TLU is 9-5 overall and 1-2 in the SCAC.

Trinity swept a pair of SCAC games over the weekend to stay unbeaten and atop the conference standings in the early season.  The Tigers opened with a 70-64 win over Texas Lutheran on Friday, then finished with a flurry by beating Schreiner 75-52 on Saturday. Murphy Burns moved up to fifth in school history in scoring over the weekend, currently standing with 1,376 career points for the Tigers.  She needs just 48 more points to become the second-leading scorer at Trinity, and would pass Krista Prato Matthews (2005-09) for that honor. Trinity resumes SCAC play this weekend with two more home games, facing off against Centenary and Austin College.  The Tigers swept all three meetings with both teams last season, including one game against each at home.
