MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - Trinity University's Murphy Burns and Southwestern University's Chelsea Leeder have been named D3hoops.com Preseason All-Americans on Tuesday afternoon. Both teams will open up the 2013-14 seasons with their respective teams on Friday.
Burns, a senior guard/forward out of Oklahoma City, Okla., was named a Second Team Preseason All-American after being named SCAC Co-Player of the Year, First Team All-Region Team, and DIII News All-American a season ago.
A prolific scorer, Burns started 27 games while playing in all 28 and averaged 18.3 points/game on 42% shooting. She also added 61 steals on the year as well as 58 assists.
In her career, Burns has earned All-SCAC honors twice, both being named First Team in 2011-12 as well as this past season as well as All-Region honors both of those years.
Burns led the Tigers to their first SCAC Championship since 2004-05 and a berth in the NCAA Tournament.
Leeder, a senior guard/forward out of Nacogdoches,Texas, was named a Third Team Preseason All-American as she was named SCAC Co-Player of the year, SCAC Co-Defensive Player of the Year, and First Team All-Region.
She started 25 games for the Pirates while playing in 27 and averaged 14.9 points/game on 42% shooting. She added 65 steals and 27 blocks to lead the team and added 95 assists to finish second on the team. She had either broken or is approaching nearly every school record at Southwestern.
In her career, Leeder was named the SCAC Newcomer of the Year in 2011 and earned First Team All-SCAC honors in 2011-12 as well as this past season.
Leeder led the Pirates to some of their best performances in SCAC Tournament history, including a trip to the SCAC Title Game a year ago where they eventaully fell to Trinity.
Burns and Trinity opens things up on Friday, November 15th in Georgetown against Moravian at 6 p.m. Leeder and Southwestern will follow up the Tigers on their home floor when they welcome in Hardin-Simmons at 8 p.m.
