LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - Daniel Withers of Southwestern University and Kaitlyn Goertz of Schreiner University have been selected as the SCAC Male and Female Character & Community Student-Athletes of the Week, respectively, for the week ending Sunday, January 5.
The SCAC Character & Community award was created in 2009 to
honor and recognize the efforts of the
extraordinary student-athletes of the conference who not
only excel athletically on the field, course, court, pool or

DANIEL WITHERS OF SOUTHWESTERN
UNIVERSITY, a junior on the
men's swimming & diving team from Dallas, Texas, has been
selected the SCAC Character & Community Male
Student-Athlete-of-the-Week for the week ending Sunday, January
5.
Withers, a captain this season and letterwinner the last two, has
been a consistent contributor for the SU swim team since coming to
Georgetown, placing in the top 16 in his events at the SCAC
Championships the past two seasons.
The junior also excels in the classroom. Double majoring in
Biology and Spanish, with a Chemistry minor, Withers was on the
Deans List and the SCAC All-Sportsmanship team his freshman year,
and was also on the SCAC Student-Athlete Academic Honor Roll the
spring of 2012 and 2013.
In addition to his academic pursuits, Withers is a member of Alpha
Phi Omega, a service based fraternity, an SAAC representative, and
an Eagle Scout.
KAITLYN GOERTZ OF SCHREINER UNIVERSITY, a
sophomore forward on the women's basketball team, has been selected
the SCAC Character & Community Female
Student-Athlete-of-the-Week for the week ending January 5.
The 5’11” forward for the Mountaineers’ team
played in 21 games in her freshman year as well as the first five
games this fall, including two starts, but hurt her back and has
missed the past six games with the injury. It is hoped that she
will be back early in the SCAC season for the Mountaineers.
Although her season to date has been hampered with injuries, that
hasn’t stopped Goertz from contributing in many areas on
campus in her first three semesters at SU.
The San Antonio, Texas native is both a Schreiner University
Ambassador as well as a Peer Coordinator to incoming freshmen
students. She is a member of SHINE, an on-campus student
organization that promotes multi-cultural events as well as racial
awareness and harmony.
Goertz serves on both the Student Food Service Committee and the
Probability Research Project. She also has been chosen to serve as
a student tutor in the Academic Services Lab. Her involvement
in so many areas in such short period of time comes from the fact
that she has already been recognized as an academic achiever. A
Mathematics Major, Goertz has earned academic honors in all three
of her semesters, including President’s List in the spring
and Dean’s List this past fall. She also is the team
representative to the Student-Athletic Advisory Committee and
helped put on the Fall Rally Day ’13.
Goertz has also been involved in several off-campus projects
including serving with the San Antonio Food Bank which distributes
food to needy families throughout Kerr Country.
