Texas Lutheran Rallies for Two Wins to Take 2016 SCAC Softball Title; Third Straight Championship for the Bulldogs

SAN ANTONIO, Texas -- Needing two victories on championship Sunday, Texas Lutheran University accomplished just that as the Bulldogs defeated Trinity University 6-1 and 7-2 to earn its third consecutive SCAC Softball title and an automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament Sunday afternoon on the campus of Trinity. Official Website l Postgame Interview w/ Taylor Yancey & Coach Wade Wilson

The title is the third straight for Texas Lutheran, who has won every SCAC softball title since joining the conference prior to the 2014 season.

GAME 1 - TEXAS LUTHERAN 6, TRINITY UNIVERSITY 1

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Veny Pizana was dominant for the second straight game as she held Trinity to just four hits and struck out nine in a complete game effort.
  • After giving up a first ining single, Pizana did not allow another hit until the sixth inning.
  • A three-run fourth inning game TLU a 4-0 lead.
  • Texas Lutheran out-hit Trinity, 7-4.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Trinity jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead with a run in both the first and second innings.
  • Texas Lutheran rallied with two runs in the bottom of the third.
  • A three-run fourth inning and single run in the fifth and sixth innings provided all the cushion the Bulldogs would need.
  • Taylor Grissom improved to 16-0, scattering four hits over 5.0 innings of shutout relief.
  • Taylor Yancey's two double give her 24 for the season, tying a SCAC single-season record.

CHAMPIONSHIP DAY NOTABLES

  • This was the fifth time in SCAC history that an "if necessary" game has been played on the final day of the tournament. In those games, the team that forced the "if necessary" game is 4-1 in the next game.
  • With the victory, Texas Lutheran improved to 41-3, the most wins in a single-season by any school in SCAC history.
  • Texas Lutheran is just the third team to win three consecutive SCAC softball championships. Trinity won four straight from 1999 to 2002 and then three straight from 2005-2007.
