SAN ANTONIO, Texas -- Director of Golf Carla Spenkoch has announced her retirement after 23 seasons leading the Trinity University men's and women's golf programs.
Coach Spenkoch joined the Tiger staff in 1998 and served as the Head Coach for both the men's and women's teams during her tenure at Trinity. She was the Head Coach for the women's teams for the past 11 years.
"Carla has been an invaluable member of the Athletics staff and an outstanding coach of our golf programs for many years," said Director of Athletics Bob King. "I am grateful for all of the things she has accomplished over the years in developing our golf teams. She will be sorely missed around the department, but we all wish her the best in retirement."
Trinity won the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Men's Golf Championship under her leadership in 2005, but she also took the 2003 team to the NCAA Division III Playoffs for the first time since 1979. The Tigers finished 18th at the NCAA Championships that season, collecting a pair of All-American accolades that season as well.
Coach Spenkoch led the women's team to four conference titles in the last seven seasons (2020 championships were cancelled), including the 2021 SCAC Championship in her final season with the team. She was also named the SCAC Women's Golf Coach of the Year following each of her previous conference crowns in 2014, 2016, and 2017. Coach Spenkoch also led the women's teams to second-place finishes in the SCAC on four occasions, as well as two runner-up seasons with the men's team.
A graduate from the University of Texas, Coach Spenkoch was the captain of the Longhorns team for two seasons and was voted the squad's Most Valuable Athlete. She is a member of the staff at The Quarry Golf Club and has been tabbed as one of the Top Texas Women Instructors by Texas Golf for Women magazine. Coach Spenkoch is also a Life Member of the Ladies Professional Golf Association Teaching and Club Division.
