Trinity Cruises Past Southwestern in SCAC Women's Quarterfinal

SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Top-seeded Trinity University opened the game with a 12-0 run and closed out the first quarter with a 19-4 lead and never looked back to take an 93-43 home victory over eighth-seeded Southwestern University in Friday evening’s quarterfinal of the 2021 SCAC Women’s Basketball Championship at Calgaard Gymnasium. Official Tournament Website 

Trinity will now appear in the SCAC women’s tournament semifinal round for the ninth-consecutive year and the 16th time in program history. The Tigers are 13-2 in their previous 15 semifinal game appearances. 

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Trinity played its normal up-tempo game and full court pressure resulted in a season-high 34 Southwestern turnovers which the Tigers converted into 43 points. Conversely, Southwetern recorded just two points on 17 Trinity turnovers.
  • Trinity held Southwestern to 23.8 percent (5-21) from the field in the first half in racing out to a 43-13 lead. The Pirates missed all four of their three-point field goals attempts in the half and finished the game, 1-15.
  • The Tigers opened the third quarter on a 13-0 run and extended its lead to 65-23 heading into the final stanza.
  • Twelve different Trinity players played 10+ minutes with 12 players entering the scoring column and three hitting for double figures. Trinity’s bench out-scored Southwestern’s, 49-6.

NOTABLES
  • Friday’s game was the fourth time Trinity and Southwestern have squared off in the SCAC Tournament but the first matchup that wasn’t for the SCAC Title. The Tigers are now 3-1 all-time versus the Pirates in the tournament with Trinity defeating Southwestern for the SCAC Title back in 2013 and 2018. Southwestern defeated Trinity for the 2015 SCAC Title for its lone win over the Tigers in tournament action.
  • The 50-point margin of victory sets a new SCAC Tournament record breaking the previous mark of 38 points, matched on three separate occasions, most recently in 2010 when DePauw defeated Southwestern, 81-43.
  • Trinity’s 20 steals match the SCAC Tournament record set by the Tigers against Southwestern in the 2015 title game.
  • Hailey Coleman’s game-high 19 points marks the fourth-straight game the Trinity center has been in double-figures and the sixth time this season.
  • Southwestern ends its season with a 2-7 record.

UP NEXT
Trinity (8-2) advances to take on the winner of No. 4 seed Schreiner and No. 5 seed Austin College next weekend. As the top seed, Trinity will host the winner of the Mountaineers and ‘Roos. Dates and times for all semifinal games will be announced on Monday.
