SCAC Baseball Recap - Week 4

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. -- The fourth week of Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Baseball continued this past week with 27 games on the schedule.

Centenary (13-2) continued its best season start with a pair of doubleheader sweeps over LeTourneau. The Gents improved to 7-0 at home with the 12-1 and 11-0 victories on Friday. Senior Connor Lee picked up the first win for the Gents as he allowed just one unearned run in five innings of work, scattering five hits, with no walks and two stakeouts. Gary Hewitt and Brady Robinson each went 2-for-4 with two RBI and combined to score three runs. Hewitt and Tyler Erickson led the way for the Gents in the second game with three hits each. Conner Poche picked up the victory, not allowing a run or a hit in his five innings of work with one walk and two K’s. Saturday’s doubleheader featured a 5-3 win followed by an 11-4 victory to end the weekend. Parker Primeaux started for the Gents in the early game, working two innings, allowing a run on two hits and no walks. Jacob Colby opened the second game of the day, going 2.1 innings, allowing four runs, three hits and a walk. Preston Ludwick and Tyler Welch each recorded three RBIs. 

Top-ranked Trinity (9-1) went 3-1 on the week, with a 10-5 victory over McMurry on Tuesday. The Tigers finished a 2-1 weekend at Sul Ross State with a 13-8 win on Saturday and a 9-5 victory Sunday. On Saturday, Michael Goodrich provided a grand slam, drew a pair of walks, and drove in five total runs to lead the Tigers. Jack Wisniewski finished 2-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored. Corey Cater struck out seven batters in five innings of relief to earn the win. The Tigers took the lead on Sunday with a grand slam from Jack Vonderhaar. Joseph Chavana finished off the game, coming in on relief to strike out two hitters to close out the win for the Tigers. 

St. Thomas (11-1) split two contests on Friday against Belhaven before taking the rubber match on Saturday to close out the weekend. In a 12-11 victory to open the weekend, Hunter Pachal led the Celts with four RBIs. John Sebok went 3-for-6, adding two RBI and a run scored. Eric Moore tossed 4.0 innings, allowing just two hits, to pick up the win. With a six-run eighth inning, the Celts finished the weekend with a 10-9 victory. A two-RBI single from Jason Brown, an RBI triple from Parker Edwards, an RBI double from John Sebok, and two RBI singles from Caleb Edmonds and Leo Galvan provided the big inning damage. 

Schreiner (5-4) went 4-2 over the week, with a doubleheader loss to Hardin-Simmons on Wednesday. The Mountaineers bounced back with a four-game sweep of Southwest (N.M.) over Saturday and Sunday. In the Friday’s 9-2 victory, senior Reece Hohhertz led the way recording a home run and three RBI. Garrett Whitley gave up just four hits while facing 24 batters and recorded six strike outs. Reece Hohhertz led the Mountaineers in the second victory as he recorded his second home run of the day, to go along with three RBI. Day two saw a 10-6 victory in game one, followed by a 5-2 win in the series finale. Multiple Mountaineers were contributed on Sunday, including Jeffrey Williams (a double and two RBI), Josh Gilliam (a home run and an RBI) and Miguel Quinones (three RBI). Solid at bats from Williams (a double and two RBI), Keller Driskill (a triple) and Devin Hooper (a home run/one RBI) gave Schreiner the 5-2 victory in Sunday’s series finale.

Texas Lutheran (6-4) went 1-2 over the weekend against East Texas Baptist. Friday’s 19-4 road victory was led by Tyler Cauley, who blasted a two-run home run in the fourth and another two-run homer in 4-3 eighth. Six different Bulldogs had at least two RBI, with Cole Irby adding four hits and three RBI. Joe Jimenez also hit a two-run home run in the seventh, walked twice, and scored three runs in the victory.

Ausitn College (4-3) also went 1-2 over the weekend, with a 3-2 victory over Mary Hardin-Baylor on Saturday. Ryan Culp surrendered two runs, only one earned, on five hits to pick up the win. The ‘Roos collected three hits, with Branson Vrazel, Zack Mahoney, and Jake Webster each singling in the game.

Southwestern (2-7) charted a 6-4 victory over Texas-Dallas on Tuesday, with a a weekend doubleheader scheduled against McMurry being cancelled. In the victory, Hayden Craig led the Pirates with a 2-for-4 performance at the plate, driving in two RBIs with a run scored. Maxwell Mims and Jacob Tanner had identical 2-for-5 performances with one RBI and run scored each from the middle of the lineup. 

Dallas (1-6) was swept by Howard Payne in its three game series over the weekend. Game one was close until a 10-run fifth inning from Howard Payne blew the game open. Dallas got on the board first as Michael Anderson reached on an error and then scored on an RBI double by second baseman Nathan Patton. Patton scored two batters later following a double by Michael Jaquez.  

The fifth week of SCAC baseball will see the beginning of conference play, highlighted by matchups featuring Dallas at Schreiner, Trinity at Texas Lutheran, Centenary at Austin, and St. Thomas at Southwestern.
