Southwestern now stands at 14-1 and will play in the SCAC finals against the winner of top-seeded Trinity University and No. 4 University of St. Thomas. The title match is tentatively scheduled for 10 a.m. Sunday at Trinity’s Butch Newman Tennis Center. Schreiner completed its season with a 7-12 mark.
The Pirates, ranked No. 2 in the NCAA Division III West Region, will compete in their sixth conference final in a row.
Southwestern won the top two doubles matches by scores of 8-5. Drew Shuvalov and Carlos Rodero defeated Carson Kirk and Dennis Miller on the first line. No. 2 doubles went to Hunter Bajoit and Vesko Lekovic, who were winners over Luis Cabreja and Austin Cervantes. Max Schechter and Anton Borovik of Southwestern beat Mario Gallinar and Max Schechter 8-1 on the third line.
Steven Tibbetts took No. 5 singles with a 6-2, 6-0 decision over Schechter. The clincher for the Pirates came at No. 4 singles as Rodero defeated Cervantes 6-1, 6-2.
The No. 1 singles match was halted, as Bajoit, ranked seventh in the West Region, took on Cabreja. The second line matchup between Southwestern’s Alexander Joseph and Kirk was suspended, as was the third-line tilt between Lekovic and Miller. Borovik and Gallinar’s No. 6 singles match was also stopped after the clinch by the Pirates.
