Austin College Defeats Schreiner 80-63 in SCAC Quarterfinal Action

KERRVILLE, Texas - Behind a season-high in both shooting percentage (48.4%) and assists (23), fifth-seeded Austin College secured an 80-63 victory over fourth-seeded Schreiner University in Saturday’s quarterfinal game of the 2021 SCAC Women’s Basketball Tournament in the Stephens Family Arena. Official Tournament Website 

Senior forward Reagan Chiaverini poured in a season-high 24 points to lead all scorers and grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds to post her third double-double of the season, vaulting Austin College into the semifinals for the sixth consecutive season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Austin College scored the opening four points and led by as many as five in the opening 10 minutes, however Schreiner led 18-17 at the end of the first quarter after closing the opening frame on a 6-0 run.
  • Schreiner scored the opening bucket of the second quarter to extend its lead to three, but Austin College would answer with a 10-0 run over a 2:41 stretch to regain a lead it would never relinquish.
  • Austin College led by as many as 12 in the second quarter and carried a 41-31 lead into the half thanks to 52.9 percent shooting from the floor (9-for-17) in the quarter and limiting Schreiner to just 33.3 percent shooting (5-for-15).
  • The ‘Roos continued their hot shooting coming out of the half, connecting on a blistering 53.8 percent (7-for-13) from the floor in the third quarter and took a 14-point lead into the final frame.
  • Austin College stretched the lead out to as many as 21 points after Addison Walling hit a three-point field goal with 2:30 left in the contest on its way to a 17-point victory.
  • Austin College grabbed 43 rebounds and held Schreiner to a season low 33 rebounds.
  • The ‘Roos outscored the Mountaineers, 46-20, in the paint.
  • Austin College led Schreiner in both second chance points (12-11) and fast break points (10-5), while the Mountaineer bench outscored the ‘Roos bench, 33-18.
  • Despite the loss, Schreiner hit a season-high 10 three-point field goals and dished out a season best 16 assists.

NOTABLES
  • The victory snapped a three-game losing streak for Austin College. 
  • Today marked the third meeting all-time between Schreiner and Austin College in the SCAC Tournament. The Mountaineers had won the previous two meetings, winning in the 2014 quarterfinals and the 2016 semifinals.
  • The fifth seed has now beaten the fourth seed in three consecutive SCAC Women’s Basketball Tournaments.
  • As the defending SCAC Tournament Champions, Austin College marks the 14th time out of 17 opportunities the defending champion has advanced to the semifinals the next year.
  • With the win, Austin College is headed to the semifinal round for the eighth time in program history. The ‘Roos are 1-6 in their previous seven semifinal appearances.
  • Schreiner ends its season at 5-4 record.
UP NEXT
Austin College (6-4) advances to take on the top-seeded Trinity next weekend in San Antonio, a rematch of last year’s SCAC Championship game. Trinity defeated Austin College, 79-61, back on February 13th in the lone regular season matchup between the two schools. Dates and times for all semifinal games will be announced on Monday.
