Volleyball Recap (Week 2) - Around the SCAC

SUWANEE, Ga. - Austin College and Birmingham-Southern remain the only two undefeated teams in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference through the second week of the season. The Kangaroos extended their winning streak to 12 games dating back to last year while the Panthers extended their streak to nine straight wins dating back to last year.

AROUND THE SCAC

No. 22 Austin College remained unbeaten on the year by going 5-0 last week, running their record to 10-0 for the season. The ‘Roos started the week with 3-0 victories over Mid-America Christian, Mary Hardin-Baylor and Hardin-Simmons before picking up a 3-1 win over McMurry and a 3-2 victory over Southwestern Assemblies of God to close out the 15th annual Austin College Classic. Jessica Fleming had an outstanding week for the ’Roos, averaging 4.39 kills per set with a .565 attack percentage while adding 1.89 blocks per set. Jordan Anderton averaged 11.44 assists per set with a .517 attack percentage, four service aces and 2.22 digs and 0.78 blocks per set.
  
Birmingham-Southern remained undefeated with four more wins this past weekend at the Rhodes Fall Classic, defeating Franklin & Marshall, Millsaps, Central Baptist, and Webster, moving to 8-0 on the season. The 8-0 start is the best start in program history. The Panthers are on the road again this weekend, opening conference action at the first West/Central Divisional, hosted by Southwestern.

Centre participated in the Hanover Invitational, a tournament they won a year ago, this past weekend. They did not bring back the trophy this year, but did play well enough to finish in third place with a 2-2 record. Centre opened play against host school Hanover where they lost a heartbreaker in five games. After their loss to the Panthers of Hanover, Centre was not able to rebound and ended up losing a three game match to Thomas More. On day two of the tournament the Colonels came out with a strong victory in the morning against Anderson winning in three games before ending the tournament on a win against Spalding University, 3-1. Centre hosts the annual Centre College Classic this Friday, Sept 17-18. The Colonels will take on Mount Union Friday night and Maryville and Fisk on Saturday.

No. 9 Colorado College split four matches en route to a second-place finish in the 2010 Molten Volleyball CC Invitational. The Tigers swept Wheaton and Linfield during the round-robin portion of the tournament, but lost twice to No. 16 Eastern University, including a five-set decision in the championship match. Meredith Ballard had a match-high 18 kills to lead CC to a 3-0 victory over Wheaton College in Friday’s first match. Emily Perkins recorded a double-double with 11 kills and 12 digs, while Laura Goldsmith finished with a match-high 24 digs. The Tigers lost for the first time this season on Friday night, dropping a 3-1 decision to the Eagles. CC goes on the road for the first time next weekend when the Tigers travel to Georgetown, Texas, for the first round of SCAC crossover matches. CC faces Hendrix and Rhodes on Saturday, and finishes the weekend against Millsaps and Austin College. 

DePauw improved to 5-4 on the season after winning three of four matches at the Rose-Hulman Invitational. The Tigers opened with 3-0 wins over Principia and Franklin on Friday before dropping a 3-1 match to Rose-Hulman and beating Eureka, 3-0. The Tigers hit at a .291 clip for the weekend and averaged 12.3 kills per set. Annie Collier paced the Tigers with 3.0 kills per set, while hitting .392. Kristen Chynoweth hit a team-best .406 for the tournament, while Paige Thompson led the way with 1.0 blocks per set. After a Tuesday home match against Mount St. Joseph, DePauw hosts the eight-team DePauw Tiger Invitational which includes No.1 Washington-St. Louis, No. 2 Juniata and No 10 Carthage.
  
Hendrix hosted its 2010 “Not Quite” Fall Classic over the weekend and saw its 4-1 opening week record slip under the .500 mark with four straight losses for a 4-5 overall record. Hendrix opened its tournament with a grueling 3-2 loss to Huntingdon and then dropped a 3-1 contest to Howard Payne on Friday afternoon at Grove Gymnasium. The Warriors clawed their way through a 28-26 opening game against the Hawks, before losing games two and three, 25-21 and 25-15, respectively.  Hendrix saw its losing streak stretch to four games after a pair of 3-1 losses on the final day of the classic Saturday. Senior outside hitter Becca Clancy and junior outside hitter Jennifer Youngblood led the team with 37 kills apiece on the weekend.

Millsaps split their matches this week at the Rhodes Invitational falling to both Rhodes and BSC on Friday before defeating Franklin & Marshall and Webster on Saturday. The Majors struggled on Saturday closing out close matches, falling 3-1 to both BSC and Rhodes. Every set was close, but MC just couldn’t get over the hump to take the sets they needed. They did manage to turn things around on Saturday, winning both matches in five sets against Franklin & Marshall and Webster. Junior outside hitter Maggie Tumminello led the Majors offensively with 47 kills over the four matches in Memphis in 167 attempts for a .150 average, including eight service aces and eight blocks.  The Majors will return to action this Friday and Saturday for the first conference cross-divisional of the season at Southwestern.

Oglethorpe traveled to Rome, Ga. this past weekend and won one out of four matches played. They topped LaGrange in five sets before failing to Covenant, Berry and Mississippi College. At 2-3, the team is back in action on Tuesday when they host Brewton Parker and Wesleyan on Pinholster Court.

Rhodes went 3-1 at this weekend’s Rhodes Invitational. The Lynx opened up the Rhodes Invitational in convincing style winning both matches on Friday. The Lynx defeated Webster in three straight sets. In the team's nightcap, Rhodes defeated the Millsaps Majors in a non-conference match up by the scores of 3-1. Against Webster, Outside Hitter Meagan Mansfield led the Lynx with 15 kills and 2 blocks, while Freshmen Right Side Lexie Krall added 10 kills, hitting .500 for the match. In the nightcap against Millsaps, the Lynx were again led by Outside Hitters Mansfield and Claire Warren, who combined for 35 kills on the night. The Lynx took the first set against Franklin and Marshall but unfortunately lost the next 3 sets to drop the match in four. In the final match of the weekend, the Lynx defeated Central Baptist in three straight sets. 

Sewanee traveled to Emory & Henry for a weekend tournament and dropped three matches to fall to 0-8 on the year. The Tigers fell to Emory & Henry Friday night in straight sets, 13-25, 7-25, and 10-25. Adrienne Borchadt filled in for the injured Erin Brahm at setter and provided eight assists and one dig. Tarver Shimek added five kills. On Saturday, the Tigers fell to Meredith, 17-25, 12-25, and 18-25 and to Roanoke by scores of 8-25, 9-25, and 15-25. Borchardt contributed 21 assists against Meredith and Liz Boddiford recorded 9 kills, 7 digs, and 1 block in the same game.

No. 17 Southwestern continued its tough schedule this weekend at the Trinity Fall Classic where they faced two teams, Puget Sound and Christopher Newport, who were ranked in the AVCA pre-season poll. SU had a successful day one winning 3-1 over ETBU and Pacific but struggled on day two falling to Puget Sound 3-1 and Christopher Newport 3-0. Junior Christina Nicholls had a big weekend recording 141 assists and 50 games over the four matches while Junior Lindsay Thompson led with 54 kills and 14 blocks. The Pirates fall to 7-3 on the season after splitting the matches and open up conference action this coming weekend, hosting the first SCAC Crossover of the year beginning on Friday at 2:00 pm against Birmingham-Southern.

Trinity went 2-2 at its TU Fall Classic over the weekend, and finished 3-2 overall over the past week. The Tigers opened the week with a 3-0 sweep of Schreiner University, then scored another sweep to open its weekend tournament against Pacific University. In a matchup of nationally-ranked teams, Trinity fell against 13th-ranked Christopher Newport – the eventual tournament champion. On Saturday, the Tigers bounced back with a 3-1 win over East Texas Baptist, but Puget Sound held on to beat Trinity 3-1 in the tournament finale. Trinity will open up SCAC action this weekend, making the short trip to Georgetown, Texas for the first SCAC Divisional of the season. The Tigers will face Rhodes and Hendrix on Friday, then take on Birmingham-Southern and 14th-ranked Southwestern – also the tournament hosts – on Saturday.  Trinity does not return home until October 6 against Texas Lutheran, and will play its next four weekends against conference opponents.
