Women's Lacrosse Recap (Week2) - Around the SCAC

SUWANEE, Ga. - In the first ever SCAC Women's Lacrosse conference match, Centre defeated Millsaps 17-4 in Danville, Kentucky. Freshman Sarah Mastey of Centre notched six goals to led the Colonels who are now 4-0 on the young season.

Led by new first-year head coach Emily Wetmore Birmingham-Southern opened their season this week at home with an exciting 13-11 victory over Carthage College. Senior Ashley Johnson and junior Chelsea Van Voorhis led with four goals apiece, while Griffin added three. Freshmen Hailey Massa and Madeline Golden led with four ground balls apiece, and junior goalkeeper Katie Bates made 11 saves for the Panthers.

Centre improved to 4-0 on the season and to 1-0 in the SCAC following a 13-10 win over Missouri-Baptist on Friday, March 4 and a 17-4 win over conference opponent Millsaps College on Sunday, March 6. Both games took place at home for the Colonels. Centre used an 8-0 run over Missouri-Baptist to start the game. Missouri-Baptist had a 4-0 run late in the second half, but it came too late as the Colonels had already secured the win. In Centre’s game on Sunday, the Colonels used two huge runs in the first half on their way to the victory. The Colonels started the game with a 5-0 run before the Majors were able to score and then they went on an 8-0 run to go into the break with a 13-1 lead. Millsaps offense stepped up in the second half of action, but the Colonels had a big enough lead built up to take their first conference win of the season. Centre will face Millsaps again in their next match on Saturday, March 12.

Junior attacker Kelsey Morell had a hand in seven goals as Colorado College cruised to a 16-2 victory over Adams State College in the season opener for both teams on Friday night at Washburn Field. Morell recorded career highs with four assists and seven points as the Tigers won their season opener for the eighth season in a row. Sophomore attacker Lara Atkins scored what proved to be the game-winning goal 3:42 into the contest after taking a feed from Morell. Atkins found the net three times in her first game with the Tigers. CC’s Leslie Jacoby and Sarah Phillips struck for two goals apiece during the first half, while Kate Krieger added the final two tallies of the contest. Freshman attacker Elise Burchard had a goal and an assist in her collegiate debut, while Madeline Scherer also tallied in her first game. Sophomore Abby Fink stopped five of six shots during the first half to earn the victory in goal. Sophomore Katie Stetson made one save on two shots in her debut between the pipes for CC. Colorado College finished with a 30-11 edge in total shots, including a 25-8 advantage in shots on goal. The Tigers return to action on Tuesday afternoon when they play host to Swarthmore College at Stewart Field.

Millsaps fell to 1-4 on the season this weekend with a pair of loses at Centre. Saturday, the Majors took on Missouri Baptist. They lost 15-3 to the Spartans (2-2). With MBU leading early, 4-0, the Majors got back-to-back goals to pull within two. Haleigh Williams struck first at the 11:16 mark, and J.B. Page got the Majors' second a mintue and a half later at 12:51. Unfortunately, MBU rattled off six more goals before the end of the half to maintain their control of the game. Page scored the Majors' final goal at 25:16 in the second half to set the final at 15-3. Sunday's game was the conference opener for both the Colonels and the Majors, with Centre coming out on top 17-4. The Colonels (4-0, 1-0) outshot the Majors (1-4, 0-1) 27-4, including 25-4 on-goal. Walker had eight saves on the day. Again, the groundballs were close with the Colonels edging an advantage 9-8. Millsaps committed 11 turnovers to Centre's four. J.B. Page got the Majors' first goal at 9:15 with Centre already leading 5-0. Millsaps scored three in the second half, but could never pull the game closer than four again. Haleigh Williams got her first of two to open the second half and Kenya Strong-Johnston got her third of the season at 11:48. Williams scored her 16th of the year with four minutes to play to round out the scoring and set the final at 17-4. The Majors will not have to wait long to even the series with the Colonels. Centre travels into Harper Davis Field this Sunday at 11:00 p.m.

Despite a school-record eight goals from sophomore Molly Arnold, the Sewanee women’s lacrosse team dropped a rain-soaked 25-20 decision to visiting Redlands on Saturday. The Tigers won 13 draw controls in the first half on their way to a 14-10 halftime lead. But the Bulldogs poured in 12 unanswered goals to open the second half and jump out to a 22-14 lead. Sewanee mounted a furious comeback, scoring five goals in the final five minutes, but it wasn’t enough, as Redlands walked away with a 25-20 win. Arnold led all scorers with eight goals, while Meg Welton pitched in seven goals two assists and seven draw controls for the Tigers. Sarah Squire notched four groundballs and caused four turnovers in the loss. Sewanee drops to 0-2 on the season and will now host Kenyon College on March 9th at 6 p.m.
