Trinity Edges 18th-Ranked Puget Sound in NCAA Tournament Opener

ABILENE, Texas - The sixth-ranked Trinity Tigers shut out the No. 18 Puget Sound Loggers 2-0 Saturday in the opening round of the NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Championship at Hardin-Simmons.

Trinity (18-1-0), which won its 17th straight game, takes on the No. 2 Hardin-Simmons Cowgirls at 1 p.m. Sunday in the second round. The Cowgirls, 3-0 winners over Principia on Saturday, handed the Tigers their only loss of the season. Hardin-Simmons beat Trinity 4-0 on Sept. 4 in Abilene.

Saturday's game was tightly played until the 61st minute, when Tiger senior defender Danika Wright scored a goal on a header. Wright , recorded her fifth goal of the season.

Junior forward Abby Loar put another one past the goalkeeper, 9 1/2 minutes later, in a shot from the box. Loar scored her 16th goal of the season.

The two assists were provided by senior center Jordan Azar who now is credited with 11 on the year.

Sophomore goalkeeper Katie Garrett made five saves in the game, bringing her season total to 47.

The two teams were even at 12 in total shots, and Trinity held a 6-5 edge in shots on goal.
