Birmingham-Southern dropped two tough games
this week at home, losing to Colorado College, 20-16, Wednesday,
and Washington & Jefferson, 12-10 in overtime, Friday. Senior
Ashley Johnson had seven goals against Colorado College, while
junior Chelsea Van Voorhis led with three goals against WJC. Junior
Katie Bates played both games in goal, recording 23 saves. BSC is
on the road this Wednesday facing Agnes Scott College in Decatur,
Ga., but then returns home on Friday and Saturday, taking on
LaGrange and Millsaps.
Centre won two of their games during Spring
Break, while they also lost two games. The Colonels hosted
Washington & Jefferson on Tuesday, March 22 and they fell 10-2.
The Colonels then traveled to Sewanee, Tenn. to take on conference
opponent Sewanee – The University of the South and they
suffered a 19-6 loss. Centre would recover from their two losses
when they traveled to Athens, Tenn. to take on Tennessee Wesleyan
College on Thursday, March 24, as they won 14-13 in overtime. The
Colonels played their final game of the break on Saturday, March 26
when they hosted Berry College. Centre used a run just over halfway
into the second half to tie the game at 8-8, before going on an
additional run late in the half to go on and win the game 11-9.
Centre is 9-3 on the season and they are 1-1 in Southern Collegiate
Athletic Conference play. Next up for the Colonels will be a
conference game against Birmingham-Southern on Friday, April 8 at
home in Danville, Ky. The game will start at 7:00 p.m.
Colorado College won two of three
matches over a four-day period during its Spring Break road trip.
Grace Maloney struck for a career-high six goals to help CC record
a 20-16 victory at Birmingham-Southern. Maloney scored four times
as the Tigers built a 13-6 lead, but her two goals during a 4-1 run
inside the final 10 minutes helped CC thwart the Panthers’
comeback. Hollis Moore had four caused turnovers and three ground
balls for Colorado College, while Maloney had a game-high five draw
controls and three ground balls. Sarah Phillips tallied what proved
to be the game-winning goal on a free-position shot with 9:50 to
go, one of eight the Tigers scored on nine opportunities. Anna
Crosby finished with a career-high four goals, while Ellie Cole
added a pair of scores and a game-high three assists. Ten players
scored for the Tigers, who struck for 20 goals in back-to-back
games for the first time since early in the 2009 season when CC
defeated Misericordia University (21-8) and University of Redlands
(22-14). The last time CC allowed 16 goals during a victory was
against Regis University on April 24, 2008, when the Tigers held on
for an 18-17 triumph in Denver. Still feeling the effects of the
previous night’s victory in Birmingham, Colorado College gave
up six consecutive goals to start the game and dropped a 17-14 loss
at Sewanee. Cole started and finished a 5-0 run that saw the Tigers
pull to within 9-7 after 30 minutes, but just like the start of the
game, Sewanee struck quickly by scoring four goals in slightly less
than five minutes to take six-goal advantage. CC outscored their
hosts 7-4 during the final 22 minutes, but could never get closer
than three goals on two occasions inside the final four minutes.
Maloney led Colorado College with five goals and a pair of assists.
Frances Staadt scored twice and set up a score, while Elise
Burchard, Phillips and Cole had two tallies apiece. Ginna Oates
scored the go-ahead goal on a free-position shot with 2:06
remaining in the game to help the Tigers post a rain-soaked 12-9
victory over Denison University in Tennessee. Abby Fink gave CC a
chance to come back by making nine of her 13 saves during the
second half, and EBurchard added a pair of insurance goals during
the final 1:08 to help the Tigers improve to 6-1 overall. Burchard
paced the Colorado College attack with three goals, while Crosby
and Oates each had a pair. Maloney had team highs of six ground
balls with three caused turnovers. CC returns to action on April 1
at Pacific University.
Millsaps met the Wash & Jeff Presidents at BSC on
Saturday and were shutout, 17-0. The Presidents out-shot the Majors
50-4 on the day. Millsaps got just two shots on-goal in the 60
minutes of play, both stopped by Wash & Jeff keepers. The
Majors had trouble moving the ball, as only 7-of-22 clear attempts
were successful. The Majors also committed 25 turnovers to the
Presidents' 12. Major goalie Madelyn Walker did all she could do to
hold off the Presidents, collecting 18 saves in the game for a .514
save percentage, her highest of the season. The Majors will return
to Panther Stadium next Saturday, this time to take on the BSC
Panthers in a SCAC-contest. Game time is slated for 1:00 p.m. in
Birmingham.
Sewanee swept its three matches this week, picking up
their first two conference wins of the season along the way. On
Wednesday, the Tigers toppled Centre in their conference opener,
winning 19-6 behind six goals from sophomore Molly Arnold. Arnold
scored the first four goals of the contest within five minutes of
the start and the Tigers never looked back on their way to the win.
Sewanee dominated, possessing 20 of 26 draw controls and picking up
23 groundballs. On Thursday, Sewanee picked up their second SCAC
win in as many days with a thrilling 17-14 win over Colorado
College. The Tigers used 6-0 and 4-0 runs to start the first and
second halves, converting 37 shots into 17 goals. Meg Welton led
the Tigers with five goals, one assist, and five draw controls in
the win. Sewanee continued their winning week with a 12-8 win over
visiting Denison in heavy fog. The Tigers used a 9-4 halftime
advantage to put the Big Red away and improve to 6-4 on the season
and 2-0 in SCAC play. Against Denison, Welton had a game-high four
goals and three draw controls. The Tigers will be back in action on
April 2nd when they travel to Mt. Berry, Georgia for a
non-conference match up with Berry College.
