Volleyball Recap (Week 6) - Around the SCAC

SUWANEE, Ga. - After taking a week off, Trinity posted a 5-0 record on the week, including going 4-0 at the SCAC Central/West crossover tournament at Millsaps to improve its record to 15-8 overall and 7-3 in the SCAC. The five wins improve the Tigers' winning streak to eight matches.

AROUND THE SCAC

Austin College went 3-2 on the week with both losses coming to nationally ranked opponents, bringing their overall record to 19-5 on the season. The ‘Roos started the week with a tough 3-2 loss at No. 22-ranked UT-Dallas before winning three of four at the SCAC Crossover in Jackson. The ‘Roos topped Birmingham-Southern 3-1 to start the weekend before topping both Rhodes and Hendrix 3-0, and finished the weekend with a 3-1 defeat at the hands of No. 18-ranked Southwestern. Jessica Fleming had an outstanding week, averaging 5.16 kills and 1.42 blocks per set with a .551 attack percentage and Jordan Anderton averaged 11.89 assists and 2.16 digs per set. Jessica Wash also had a strong week with 2.47 kills and 1.29 blocks per set and a .375 attack percentage, and Quinn McKee and Jenna Wilson averaged 4.95 and 4.26 digs per set, respectively. This weekend the ‘Roos host the SCAC East/West Crossover on Friday and Saturday.
  
Birmingham-Southern traveled to Jackson, Miss., this weekend for the SCAC West/Central Crossover. The Panthers lost on Saturday to Austin, 3-1, and No. 8 Colorado College, 3-0. On Sunday, BSC lost to Trinity, 3-0, but defeated Hendrix, also by the score of 3-0. The Panthers are now 20-5 overall on the season, including a 12-0 mark at home.

Centre posted two victories this past Saturday as they played in a tri-match against Piedmont College and Peace College hosted by Piedmont. The two wins bring the Colonels overall record to 10-12 while playing as many as four freshman on the court at a time. The team won the first match against host Piedmont in five close games before turning around and defeating Peace College in four games just 30 minutes later. The team will next play at Asbury on Tuesday, Oct 12 before traveling to Austin College on Thursday to compete in the second East/West crossover on Friday and Saturday Oct 15-16.

Amy Schornack recorded the first triple-double of her career to help No. 7 Colorado College record a three-set victory over Birmingham-Southern. Schornack had 31 assists, 12 digs and 10 kills to lead the Tigers to their second win of the day. Sarah Schmoker also had 10 kills, while Emily Perkins had 13 digs to pace the defense. Perkins posted her eighth double-double of the season to lead CC to a sweep of Hendrix College in the first match of the day. Erika Pirotte led the Tigers’ attack with 15 kills and Sarah Schmoker added 14 more as CC began Day 2 with hard-fought three-set victory over host Millsaps. CC suffered its first conference loss against Trinity after dominating the first set. Perkins paced the Tiger attack with 11 kills and added four blocks. Schornack became the second player in CC history to eclipse the 2,500-assist plateau. Colorado College plays its final four SCAC matches next weekend at Austin College. The Tigers face DePauw and Sewanee on Friday, and then Oglethorpe and host Austin College on Saturday.

DePauw had the week off. The Tigers (14-8, 6-1SCAC) return to the courts on  Oct. 12 when they host Hanover (Ind.). DePauw will then travel to Sherman, Texas for the SCAC East/West crossover hosted by Austin College. The Tigers will take on Colorado College, Southwestern, Austin College and Oglethorpe.
  
Hendrix went 2-4 this week after a pair of 3-0 midweek wins and four straight-set losses at the SCAC Central vs. East Crossover, hosted by Millsaps. The Warriors earned their eighth and ninth wins of the season against Crowley’s Ridge College and Philander Smith College, respectively, on Tuesday afternoon. Hendrix then lost to No. 8 Colorado College and No. 18 Southwestern on the opening day of the SCAC Central vs. East Crossover on Saturday. On Sunday Hendrix fell to Austin College and then Birmingham-Southern to wrap up the weekend. The Warriors fall to 9-17 overall and 1-10 in SCAC play. Hendrix was led by first year middle blocker Alyssa Jaksich with a .383 percentage this week. Senior outside hitter had a team-best 34 kills in 13 games played. First year setter Zoe Calhoun tallied 136 assists for a 7.56 average. Senior defensive specialists Kim Larson and Sara Gawor paced the team with 60 and 55 digs, respectively.

Millsaps got a non-conference win over Division I Alcorn State 3-0 on Tuesday night before hosting the West-Central  tournament over the weekend. The Majors fell to Southwestern 3-2 on Saturday morning and Trinity in the afternoon 3-1. Sunday saw the Majors split their two games, falling 3-0 to Colorado College before taking on Rhodes in the final game of the tournament, winning 3-1. Kasey Laird paced the team over the week with 61 kills (.295), 56 digs (2.95), and 15 blocks over the five games. The Majors will participate in a two-game tournament at Belhaven next Saturday. They will take on Xavier of Louisiana and the hosting Blazers.

Oglethorpe went 2-0 in non-conference action this past week by sweeping Toccoa Falls and Spelman. The team celebrated Senior Night on Tuesday in style by topping Toccoa Falls on Pinholster Court, 3-0. Graduating seniors Trupti Patel, Hilary Miller and Sara Blair were honored in a pre-match ceremony after which the Petrels dominated for their 5th win of the season. Blair celebrated senior night by smashing 13 kills while Patel and Miller combined for 30 digs. The Petrels also swept Spelman 3-0. With the wins the Petrels are 6-13 on the season and will travel to Austin for weekend SCAC action.

Rhodes dropped its first two matches of the SCAC Central-West Divisional hosted by Millsaps College. After winning the first set against Trinity by the score of 25-17, the Lynx were unable to keep the momentum and dropped the next three sets. Junior outside hitter Claire Warren led the Lynx offense with 12 kills while senior libero Kayla McCrury led the team with 6 service aces and 21 digs. The team dropped its last match to Austin College in three straight sets. Senior right side Phylicia Douglas led all attackers with 6 kills and setter Michelle Quina paced the Lynx with 21 assists. The Lynx lost its last two matches of the weekend. In the team's first match, the Lynx lost in three straight sets to Southwestern. Senior Kayla McCrury led the team with 25 digs, which was good enough to surpass the 2000 dig mark in her career.

Sewanee picked up its first win of the season in their only game of the week, topping Oakwood University in straight sets. Liz Boddiford served three straight points to put Sewanee up 23-15. Tarver Shimek put the second set away with a kill for the Tigers’ 25th point. Boddiford led the Tigers with seven kills on the night, while Conkell added six. Sophomore Erin Brahm recorded thirteen assists in the contest and came up with ten digs. Barrows tallied seven digs. The Tiger victory moved Sewanee to 1-21 on the season and earned head  coach Jessica Cortese her first win at the helm of the Sewanee volleyball program.

No. 18 Southwestern went 4-1 this week and is now 19-5 on the year and 10-1 in the SCAC. On Thursday night SU faced off against nationally-ranked UT Dallas and fell 3-1 (25-18, 22-25, 23-25, 23-25). After the loss the Pirates returned to SCAC action at the SCAC Crossover. They first faced Millsaps who took them to five games but SU pulled out the win 3-2. The Pirates rebounded with a dominating win over Hendrix 25-21, 25-16, 25-18. Day two set SU against Rhodes which saw the Pirates again win in three 25-18, 25-21, 25-16 and Austin College where Southwestern won in four, 18-25, 25-15, 25-16, 26-24. The Pirates head to Sherman, TX this weekend to continue SCAC action. They face Sewanee in their first game on Friday.

After not playing any matches for just over a week, Trinity returned to action with five victories this week – including a 4-0 record at the SCAC West-Central Divisional Tournament at Millsaps. Trinity opened with a 3-0 home win over Texas Lutheran on Wednesday, then headed on the road for the Divisional Tournament. The Tigers avenged an earlier loss to Rhodes with a 3-1 victory to start off the weekend, then defeated hosting Millsaps 3-1 to finish Saturday’s action. On Sunday, Trinity again was able to beat a team it lost to earlier this year with a 3-0 sweep of Birmingham-Southern.  In the weekend finale, Trinity matched up with seventh-ranked Colorado College for the first time this season. Trinity scored the 3-1 upset victory, bouncing back from a loss in the first set to take three straight, and earn the team’s eighth consecutive victory.  Trinity will continue its SCAC schedule this weekend in Sherman, Texas, with the SCAC East-West Divisional Tournament. Trinity will face Centre and Oglethorpe on Friday, followed by Saturday matches against Sewanee and 18th-ranked Southwestern.
