SUWANEE, Ga. - . Nate Sprenkel recorded five saves in helping DePauw to its school-record tying 12th shutout of the season after battling Centre to a 0-0 battle. The DU Tigers remain atop the SCAC two points ahead of Trinity who picked up a tough 2-1 OT win against Southwestern last week.

Austin College saw their lone
match of the week postponed due to severe weather in the Sherman
area over the weekend.
Birmingham-Southern snapped a three-game losing streak
with a 3-0 home shutout of Millsaps on Saturday. Sophomore Nicholas
Reitmeier and junior Sean Head each had a goal and an assist in the
game. Junior Garner Shivers recorded the other goal, and freshman
Brynjar Arnason also had an assist. Senior goalkeeper Shachar Hovan
recorded the shutout, his third on the season. Shivers leads the
team with 11 points (4 goals, 3 assists).
Centre had a tie in their only game of the weekend, a 0-0
draw with #11 DePauw University. The Colonels outshot the Tigers
12-11 and had 10 corners to DePauw’s 3, but were unable to
register a goal in the 110 minutes of play. The scoreless tie
brings Centre’s overall record to 11-3-2 and 6-1-2 in SCAC
play. Centre will play out of conference this weekend as they
travel to Tennessee to take on Maryville
College.
Colorado College dropped a 2-0 decision
at the University of Dallas on Sunday in the Tigers’ final
non-conference game of the season. The home team has won the last
four matches in the series since the former Division III
independents played to a 1-1 tie at Dallas on Sept. 28, 2006. CC
had its chances in the offensive zone, but was unable to capitalize
on any of its 16 shots or nine corner kicks. Matt Fechter launched
five shots, but the Tigers have not scored an offensive goal since
Oct. 10 at Southwestern. Andy McGhie made for saves for Colorado
College. The Tigers return to Texas next Friday for a game against
Austin College that was postponed on Saturday because of severe
weather.
#11 DePauw is now 13-1-2 overall and 7-0-1 in the SCAC
after battling to a 0-0 tie at Centre. Centre held a 12-11 edge in
shots and led, 11-4, in corners. Nate Sprenkel recorded five saves
in helping DePauw to its school-record tying 12th shutout of the
season.
Hendrix battled through its first unbeaten weekend against
SCAC competition. The Warriors snapped a four-game skid with
1-0 win over Oglethorpe on Friday and then tied their first
opponent of the year 2-2 at Sewanee on Sunday. Hendrix picked
up just their fourth all-time win against Oglethorpe at
4-11-3. The Warriors first tie of the season was also their
first ever against Sewanee with a 4-14-1 all-time record.
Hendrix falls to 5-7-1 overall and 1-5-1 in the SCAC. Junior
forward Duncan Keegan scored the Warriors’ golden goal 2:18
into overtime off a double-assist from first year midfielder Grant
Ingram and sophomore forward Connor Silvestri. Ingram started
the game-winning play with a long through pass over the top of the
defense to Silvestri. Silvestri eyed the charging goalkeeper
on the breakaway and quickly dished the ball to Keegan, who then
chipped a one-timer over the top from 35 yards out.
Hendrix’s strong back line, consisting of senior Mac Barnes
and juniors Ryan Menchacha, Ian Evans and Kevin Gregory, allowed
just four shots on-goal (three in first half). Junior
goalkeeper Adam Legg earned his first shutout of the year after
another solid day in front of the net. The Warriors battled
through their double-overtime affair at Sewanee as both teams
scored one goal apiece in each half and Hendrix owned the only shot
on-goal in extra minutes. Silvestri scored the opening goal,
his 12th of the year, in the 28th minute off a double-assist from
Gregory Barnes. Sewanee junior Mark Meyer knotted the game at
1-1 on an assist from junior Matt Lightfoot with 8:45 left before
the first horn. Silvestri then buried his second score to the
low corner off an assist from junior Thompson in the 77th
minute. Lightfoot found the right place at the right time in
the 83rd minute when a shot bounced off the post and fell at his
feet for the easy tap in, tying the game 2-2. Legg made five
saves for Hendrix, while Sewanee’s sophomore goalkeeper
Freddie Delchamps denied six shots.
Millsaps fell 3-0 to the Birmingham-Southern
Panthers on Saturday in their only game this week. The Panthers
outshot the Majors 22-8 with only one Major shot-on-goal in 90
minutes. Taylor Harrison had three shots on the night, including
the one opportunity against the Panther keeper. Major keeper
Stephen Andrieu saved seven other Panther attempts in his 90
minutes in goal. The Majors will return to action next Friday as
they travel up to Memphis to take on Rhodes College in a 7:00 p.m.
match.
Oglethorpe went 1-2 on the week, losing to both Maryville
and Hendrix 1-0 in overtime before topping Rhodes, 3-2. The Petrels
shook off the consecutive overtime losses to rally for three
unanswered goals against the Lynx to lift their record to 6-7-1 on
the season. Trailing 2-0 at the half against Rhodes, the Petrels
got second half goals from Nick Williamson, E.J. Ovie-Ogodo and
Steven Bott to pick up the win. Bott’s game-winner came with
only 2 minutes remaining in the contest. The Petrels will travel to
Texas this weekend to battle with Southwestern and Trinity.
Rhodes went 1-1 in SCAC over the weekend.
The Lynx traveled to Sewanee on Friday night. It was a back
and forth first half, as Rhodes edged the Tigers in shots, 5-4;
however the one that would count would come in the 29th minute, as
junior, Christian Kurth, vollied home a lay off from senior, Brett
Simek, to put the Lynx up 1-0. The second half was much like
the first, with both teams seeing opportunities on goal, but
neither team could capitalize, giving Rhodes the 1-0 win.
Rhodes traveled to Oglethorpe on Sunday afternoon. The Lynx
opened up with a 2-0 lead in the first half with goals from Petar
Radujkovich and Michael Rubin. The second half told a
different story, as the Stormy Petrels were able to fight back,
finding the back of the net 3 times to win 3-2.
Sewanee tied a game and lost a game this weekend in
conference action, finishing the weekend with a 1-0 loss to Rhodes
and 2-2 tie with Hendrix. The Tigers are now 3-8-3 overall and
1-2-3 in SCAC play. The Tigers hosted Rhodes on Friday night
and the Lynx picked up a goal midway through the first half and
never looked back, topping the Tigers 1-0. Christian Kurth took a
pass from Brett Simek at the 28:29 mark and slipped it past Sewanee
keeper Freddie Delchamps for the game-winning goal. Sewanee
finished the night with the edge in shots and corners, eight to
seven and four to one, respectively. Delchamps finished the night
with four saves. On Sunday, Sewanee played host to the Warriors of
Hendrix College. Hendrix got on the board first with a goal from
Connor Silvestri in the 17th minute to make it 1-0. But Sewanee
tied things up eight minutes later when junior Mark Meyer took a
pass from Matt Lightfoot and sent a diving header into the net.
Things were quiet until late in the second half. Silvestri broke
the tie with just 12:11 remaining in the game with a goal off a
pass from Colin Thompson. Sewanee answered, though, just six
minutes later, when Lightfoot controlled a deflected shot and sent
the ball past Hendrix keeper Adam Legg. Lightfoot’s goal made
it 2-2 and sent the game into overtime. Neither team could break
the deadlock despite two overtime periods and the contest ended in
a 2-2 tie. Both teams tallied 14 shots in the contest, while
Hendrix held the edge in corner kicks, ten to five. Delchamps
collected six saves in the game. Sewanee heads to San Antonio on
Friday for an SCAC match up with Trinity.
Penalty kicks were the demise of Southwestern this
week as they fell to Trinity 2-1 in overtime Thursday and 3-2 to UC
Santa Cruz on Saturday in San Antonio to move to 9-5 overall and
6-1 in the SCAC. The importance of the Thursday's match was
apparent as both teams played their hearts out in Georgetown.
Trinity was first on the scoreboard just before halftime on an
attempted clear by SU that took a Trinity bounce to Garcia in the
middle of the field. Southwestern had numerous great looks at goal
including one by Forrest Baker that was just six inches off target
that would have tied the game. Baker eventually got his goal with
just three minutes remaining when he headed home a corner kick by
John Mark Mines to force overtime. With only 1:33 remaining in the
first overtime TU received a penalty kick after a foul was called
in the box. Rieiro scored the goal for the game winner. The Pirates
headed to San Antonio on Saturday for a non-conference match and
were once again beat on a late game penalty kick. UCSC took the
lead early, scoring in the 13th minute, but Evan Perkins evened it
up four minutes later. UCSC scored once again before halftime, but
SU needed just one minute in the second half to even the count 2-2.
Fondy put away the penalty kick in the 73rd minute to defeat the
Pirates 3-2. Southwestern returns home for SCAC matches this
weekend, facing Oglethorpe on Friday and Sewanee on
Sunday.
#7 Trinity pulled off two victories over the last week,
defeating Southwestern in SCAC action, then downing UC-Santa Cruz
on Sunday afternoon. The Tigers opened by edging Southwestern 2-1
in overtime on Thursday afternoon, scoring on a penalty kick in the
99th minute, and handing the Pirates their first SCAC loss of the
season. On Sunday, in a rematch of a 2006 NCAA Playoff game,
Trinity earned a 3-1 comeback win over UC-Santa Cruz. UCSC
scored first, but the Tigers scored three unanswered goals –
including two from Yuri Ribiero – to take the win. Trinity
finishes off its regular season home schedule this weekend, hosting
Sewanee and Oglethorpe on Friday and Sunday. Last season,
Trinity combined to beat the two teams 11-0 on the road. The
last time these teams met in San Antonio, the Tigers won 4-0 over
Oglethorpe and 5-1 over Sewanee.
