MADDIE FATE OF TRINITY UNIVERSITY, a senior middle blocker from Croton on Hudson, N.Y., has been named SCAC Volleyball Defensive Player-of-the-Week for matches played from Monday, September 11 through Sunday, September 17. SCAC Volleyball Release (Week 3)
Fate led the 12th-ranked Tiger volleyball team to a 4-0 record at the Trinity Fall Classic last weekend, finishing off the tournament with a 3-1 win over #13 MIT. Fate led Trinity with 22 total blocks over four matches, averaging 1.57 blocks/set (season average is 1.32), and was also second on the team with 3.11 points/set. She finished with nine blocks in the opening match against Franklin & Marshall and had five or more blocks in three of the four matches this weekend. Fate was also a key factor in Trinity holding #13 MIT to just .100 hitting percentage in the Tiger win on Saturday night.
Other impressive performances in the SCAC:
Junior libero/defensive specialist Faith Coldewey of Texas Lutheran was a defensive standout in the Cal Lu Fornia Invitational with 75 digs (5.36 digs/set) as the Bulldogs went 3-1 in one of the toughest tournaments in the West Region. Junior defensive specialist Kara Spice of St. Thomas anchored a Celt backrow that picked up a key non-conference victory against Cal Lutheran last week. Spice posted 68 total digs for the weekend, averaging an outstanding 6.18 per set. First-year outside hitter Alexa Swaller of Dallas has been one of UD's most well-rounded players all season. At the Millsaps Invitational, she averaged 3.18 digs per set and tallied four total blocks in three matches while chipping in offensively with 2.64 kills per set. Junior defensive specialist/outside hitter Kiara Liedy of Centenary led the Ladies in digs in their 3-2 win over Lyon College on Saturday with a season-high 24 (three shy of single-match career-high of 27) and added three assists. In Centenary's match later that day against Hendrix, she had a team-high 14 digs with two assists and an ace, and she capped off the weekend on Sunday with a team-best 14 digs against Mary Hardin-Baylor.
