MADISON HORNER OF TRINITY UNIVERSITY, a senior midfielder/forward on the women's soccer team from Austin, Texas, has been selected the SCAC Character & Community Female Student-Athlete of the Week for the week beginning February 14.

The SCAC Character & Community award honors the efforts of student-athletes who excel in the field of athletics, and also serve their campus and community.

This year, Horner's work has included her role as the Philanthropy Chair of Trinity's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) along with being one of the women's soccer team's representatives and her involvement with San Antonio's Young Life chapter at Alamo Heights Junior School, though one of her feature roles has been with Trinity's 'Tigerthon'.

"[Tigerthon] is an ongoing fundraiser for the Children's hospital of San Antonio," Horner says. "I help plan the events, work with kids and raise money for those families that may not be able to experience things we all used to when we were kids."

The Tigers' women's soccer program has had an established history of giving back to both the Trinity and local San Antonio community. For Trinity's senior midfielder, the team's efforts had an immediate influence.

"Service has always been a large part of our program at Trinity with the women's soccer team," Horner says. "When I was a [first-year], we went to a local food bank and that just left an imprint on my life and my time here at Trinity that I can't even put into words."

For Horner, the program's collective belief in giving back is woven throughout the team but is initiated from and strengthened by its coaching staff: Head Coach Dylan Harrison and Assistant Coach Spencer Valdespino.

"Dylan and Spencer have been awesome liaisons between the program, community, and ourselves," Horner points out. "The most important and impactful moment I would say has been the opportunity to serve our community with our team and have that from the supervision of both [of our coaches]."
