Maggie Shipley, Trinity University, Women's Basketball - Character & Community

MAGGIE SHIPLEY OF TRINITY UNIVERSITY, a senior on the women's basketball team from Arlington, Va., has been selected the SCAC Character & Community Female Student-Athlete of the Week for the week beginning January 23.

The SCAC Character & Community award honors the efforts of student-athletes who excel in the field of athletics, and also serve their campus and community.

Maggie recently made a connection with South Texas Regional Adaptive & Para Sports (STRAPS) in San Antonio, where she has spent her free time sharing the game of basketball with a junior wheelchair program.

The senior and her Tiger teammates all suited up with the STRAPS junior team just days ago for an experience that helped to bond the Trinity program, but also bring about a new perspective on the game.

Maggie also spends her time as a key contributor for Trinity’s campus chapter of The Hidden Opponent (THO), a non-profit organization aimed at spreading mental health awareness nationally within the student-athlete community.

Tasked as the secretary for Trinity’s arm of THO, Maggie believes service in the community is beneficial to the mental health of intercollegiate athletes as it presents an opportunity to gain new perspective and step away from the combined grind of academics and athletics.

Based in San Antonio, STRAPS offers adaptive experiences for many popular sports with a mission to “organize, promote, administer and conduct a variety of adaptive and Paralympic-style sports for wounded service members and veterans as well as other adults and youth.”
