SCAC Volleyball Week 8 Recap - Top Three Seeds Wrapped Up During SCAC Divisional Play

SUWANEE, Ga. - Southwestern University (24-3, 14-1 SCAC), Trinity University (23-8, 13-1 SCAC) and Colorado College (22-9, 12-3 SCAC) have earned the #1, #2, and #3 seeds respectively in the upcoming SCAC Volleyball Championship tournament. Southwestern, thanks to their 4-0 mark at the SCAC West/East Divisional Oct 17-18, overtook Trinity for the top spot. Colorado College upset the seventh ranked Trinity Tigers to earn the third seed.

The Austin College volleyball team reached a program milestone over the weekend as they surpassed 500 all-time victories.  The historic win came on Friday when the team won its second match of the day, a 3-0 decision over Centre College.  Earlier in the day the team notched win #499 against Oglethorpe, also a 3-0 victory.  On Saturday the 'Roos got another win when they defeated DePauw in four games but later fell to SCAC Crossover host Southwestern 3-1.  Damaris Orasanu averaged 3.00 kills and 1.00 blocks and had a hitting percentage of .248 for the weekend, and Jessica Rose added 2.86 kills, 3.64 digs and a .258 hitting percentage.  Jordan Anderton had a strong weekend from her setting position, averaging 10.86 assists per game with a high of 58 coming in the win over DePauw.  Anderton and Rose also added four service aces apiece, while Gloria Carey led the team in that category with eight aces to go along with her 3.29 digs per game.  This week the team returns home to host the Austin College Invitational as part of homecoming weekend.
  
The Birmingham-Southern volleyball team went 2-0 this week, defeating Lee University at home, 3-0, Friday evening, and defeating North Alabama on the road, 3-2, Saturday evening. Junior outside hitter Sarah Harris led the Panthers in both matches, recording 13 kills against Lee and 21 kills against UNA. BSC now stands at 21-7 on the season and has won its last 10 straight matches. The Panthers are on the road this weekend for another SCAC Divisional, traveling to Sewanee to face Centre, DePauw, Hendrix, and Sewanee.

Centre dropped all five of its matches last week.  Losing in four games to Maryville College on Wednesday night before heading to the East/West Conference Tournament hosted by Southwestern.  The team lost all four of its matches there in three games.  Dropping contests to Southwestern, Austin, Trinity, and DePauw.  Next up for the Colonels is a dual match against local rival Asbury College on Tuesday night before playing in the final regular season conference tournament hosted by Sewanee on Saturday and Sunday.

Colorado College extended its streak of 20-win seasons to six with Saturday's three-set victory over Sewanee. Saturday's victory over No. 7 Trinity was the highest ranked team CC has defeated since a five-set victory at No. 6 Trinity on Oct. 28, 2000. Earlier that same day, Colorado College defeated No. 9 Ohio Northern University in straight sets. Colorado College is 1-4 vs. top-25 teams in 2008. With 21 digs against DePauw, senior outside hitter Anna Clithero became the second player in CC history to go over the 1,500 career dig plateau. She finished the weekend with 1,540, and now trails only Aubrey Reed's total of 1,681. With 13 kills against DePauw, Clithero also surpassed the 1,500 career kill mark. Sophomore middle blocker Emily Perkins now ranks 14th with 742 career kills, 16th with 55 solo blocks, 17th with 136 block assists, tied for 18th with 82 service aces and 22nd with 647 career digs.

DePauw split its weekend volleyball matches as it defeated Colorado College (3-2) and Centre (3-0) and lost to Southwestern (1-3) and Austin (1-3). The Tigers are 19-10 overall and 8-4 in conference play. Adrienne Cobb paced the Tigers with 43 kills (2.69/set) over the four matches and a .308 attack percentage. Ali Smith led with 162 assists (10.1/set), while Emily Smith recorded 101 digs (6.3). Cobb and Kristen Chynoweth each totaled 19 blocks (1.2/set).

The Hendrix College volleyball team split a pair of matches against Bacone College and Central Baptist College on Tuesday night at Grove Gymnasium.  The Warriors suffered a hard-fought 3-2 loss to Bacone and recorded a 3-1 win over Central Baptist.  Hendrix improves to 9-20 overall and remains at 1-10 in SCAC contests.  Bacone opened the first match with a 25-19 win in the first set.  However, the Warriors made a thrilling comeback against Bacone to win the second set, 27-25.  Bacone held a 20-9 lead before Hendrix fought its way back to tie it up at 24-24 and eventually won the second set, 27-25.  Bacone would end up taking the third (25-19) and fourth set (15-11) to win the match.  Hendrix breezed through its first two sets against Central Baptist with and hit a bump in the road during the third set, falling 22-25.  The Warriors regained their momentum and posted a 25-13 win in the final set.  Hendrix sophomore outside hitters Leah Groat and Sarah Fuller paced the team with 16 kills on the day, while junior setter Patty Hill collected 41 assists on the night.  First year setter Ashley Skinner added 39 assists to the mix.

Millsaps (13-18) picked up the split in hosting its last two home games of the season. Losing a 3-2 (25-27, 25-23, 19-25, 25-19, 10-15) match to Belhaven before picking up the 3-0 (25-16, 25-14, 27-25) victory over Huntingdon. Leading the way for the team this weekend was both Kate Hall and Maggie Tumminello who both had 20 kills apiece, while Dixie Krauss led the way defensively with 22 digs. Sophomore Hailey Miranda had another outstanding performance with 16 kills, four service aces, 19 digs and 64 assists. Rounding out the contributions were seniors Toni Manley and Sarah Exley who made their last appearances in the Hangar Dome. Manley had 11 kills and six blocks on the weekend, while Exley had six kills and four blocks. The ladies will now head to Sewanee-The University of the South for their fourth and last SCAC Cross Divisional of the year, where the team will be taking on Centre, DePauw, Oglethorpe and Rhodes.

 The Oglethorpe volleyball team won their first conference match of the season on Saturday by sweeping Sewanee, 3-0. For the weekend, Oglethorpe finished 1-3 in SCAC Cross play and their record stands at 9-21 for the season. Despite playing through team injuries, head coach Kurt Matthews has a chance to record the program's first double-digit win season in many seasons when the Petrels host Brewton Parker and Clark in Atlanta in a Pinholster Court doubleheader on Tuesday night. 

Rhodes lost its only match of the week to Union (Tenn.) 3-0. Middle Blocker Stephanie Parazak led the Lynx with 8 kills while Setter Alex Nobel added 18 assists.  Libero Kayla McCrury had 19 digs on the evening. The Lynx will head to the University of the South October 25-26th for the last SCAC Central/East Divisional of the regular season.

Sewanee dropped a pair of doubleheaders this weekend in Georgetown, Texas at the SCAC East/West competition. The Tigers lost contests to Colorado College, Trinity, Oglethorpe, and Southwestern - All by the same 3-0 score. Senior Brittany Roper led the Tiger effort, gaining 37 digs and 49 assists. Sewanee (3-17, 0-12 SCAC) will compete at home next weekend against Rhodes, Hendrix, Birmingham-Southern and Centre in front of a Homecoming Weekend crowd.

No. 15 Southwestern improved to 24-3 on the season, with a 4-0 record at the SCAC West/East Cross. The Pirates started the weekend with a 3-0 win over Centre followed by a great come from behind 3-1 victory over DePauw. In the two matches, the team was lead at the offensively by outside hitters, Danielle Bochat and Audra Gentry, combining for 54 kills. Junior middle blocker Lauren Brown added 18 kills and 6 blocks Friday and had a 0.306 hitting percentage on the weekend.  Friday, the team had a strong 3-0 win over Sewanee and a 3-1 victory over Austin College. Brown continued her strong play on Saturday as her and freshman middle blocker Lindsay Thompson combined for 20 kills against Austin College. Outside hitter Jill Wigington, turned in a great performance off the bench in the match with 11 kills and a hitting percentage of 0.211.  Senior right side, Katie Hollyfield, had one of her strongest performance this weekend with 19 kills, 5 blocks, and a 0.400 hitting percentage. The Pirates will travel to Austin College this weekend for a non-conference tournament featuring scholarship programs as well as regional power, Randolph-Macon.

No. 8 Trinity finished 3-1 last weekend at the SCAC East-West Tournament in Georgetown, Texas. Trinity swept Oglethorpe and Sewanee 3-0 on Friday, then defeated Centre 3-0 to open the second day of action.  In the final match of the weekend, Trinity was upset by Colorado College in a tightly-contested 3-1 decision. The loss to Colorado College snapped a 23-match winning streak in regular season SCAC play. The last time Trinity lost was against Austin College during the 2006 season. The Tigers return home this weekend to host the Trinity University National Invitational on Friday and Saturday.  Trinity will face Texas Lutheran, Hardin-Simmons, MIT, and 10th-ranked Ohio Northern at the tournament.
