KANSAS CITY, Kan. - Rhodes College women's head soccer coach Bobby Lessentine and Trinity University men's head soccer coach Paul McGinlay were honored as 2008 NSCAA/adidas Regional Coaches of the Year, the NSCAA announced today.
Lessentine was named the South Regional Coach of the Year after he guided the Lynx to a 14-4-2 overall record and an 8-1 mark in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play, while capturing the league championship and the program's first ever bid to the NCAA Division III playoffs. He also earned SCAC Coach of the Year as well.
"It has been a great season, I am extremely proud of our entire team," said Lessentine. "I knew we had a chance to do well this year. Our players and coaches really worked hard to secure an SCAC championship and get to the NCAA Tournament. It was a true team effort; from the coaches to the last player on the sideline."
McGinlay earned Central Regional Coach of the Year honors after he led Trinity to a 20-1-1 overall record and a 9-0-1 finish in SCAC play including the progam's 12th championship and 11th in the past 13 years. McGinlay was also named SCAC Coach of the Year. His Tigers advanced to the NCAA National Quarterfinals before falling to Amherst, 1-0.
Regional Coaches of the Year are finalists for the NSCAA/adidas
National Coach of the Year award at their respective levels. In
NCAA play, any coach who is not selected a Regional Coach of the
Year but advances to the national tournament semifinals is added to
the ballot for National Coach of the Year.
The national awards will be announced at the annual NSCAA Awards
Banquet, which will be held Friday evening, Jan. 16, in the Grand
Ballroom of the America's Center Convention Complex in St. Louis,
Mo., as part of the 2009 NSCAA Convention.
