Thirteenth-ranked Southwestern advances to NCAA South Region championship match

SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Thirteenth-ranked Southwestern University  scored a dramatic 3-2 win over Trinity University in the NCAA South Regional Semifinals on Friday night.

Trinity (31-10) lost the first set 18-25, then won 25-22 and 28-26 to take a 2-1 lead.  Southwestern (36-4) was up to the challenge, though, winning 25-21 and 15-10 in the final two sets to clinch the victory. Box Score

Southwestern was led by 15 kills each for Danielle Bochat and Audra Gentry.  Both players finished with double-doubles by also collecting 19 digs for the Pirates.  Sam Lingamfelter had a team-best 20 digs for Southwestern, while Christina Nicholls added 50 assists and 15 digs.

Trinity's Megan Dudley and Caroline Keener both posted double-doubles in the match.  While Dudley had 14 kills and 24 digs, Keener finished with 27 assists and 19 digs.  Caiti Troyer also collected 21 assists to go with a pair of service aces, while Megan Guest led all players with 31 digs.  Aly Hazelwood recorded 11 kills for the Tigers as well.

In the day's first semifinal second-ranked and top seeded Emory (Ga.) University advanced to the regional championship match by defeating Colorado College 3-1. Box Score

Emory (31-6) lost the first set 23-25, then held on to win 27-25 and 26-24 in the next two.  The Eagles finished off the match with a 25-13 win in the fourth set.

Dani Huffman led Emory with a solid double-double, collecting 19 kills and 14 digs.  Vista Murphy led the team with four aces and also finished with 14 digs, while Brannan O'Neill had a team-high 17 digs for the Eagles.  Alysse Meyer finished with 15 kills and a .361 hitting percentage for the Eagles.  Natalie Schonefeld tallied 41 assists to go with nine digs and six kills in the match.

Colorado College (27-12) was led by Annie Bernacchi's double-double, scoring 22 assists and 13 digs.  Emily Perkins led the Tigers with 16 kills and a .357 hitting percentage, while Anna Clithero finished with 14 kills.  Hannah Varnell finished with 12 digs for Colorado College.

Southwestern will face Emory in the regional championship tomorrow at 7:00 p.m.
