April Fricke hired as Birmingham-Southern Head Volleyball Coach

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - April Fricke has been hired as Birmingham-Southern's new head volleyball coach, Athletic Director Joe Dean, Jr., announced today.

Fricke comes to BSC from fellow Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference member Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas, where she served as Assistant Volleyball Coach for four seasons. At Trinity, Fricke helped the program to four consecutive SCAC titles, four consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances, and the 2006 NCAA quarterfinals. She also helped coach five All-America selections.

Fricke, who is a NESTA Certified Personal Trainer, also ran the team's strength training, jump training, and speed programs, and served as strength coach for other Trinity women's athletic teams.

In addition to her duties at Trinity, Fricke also served as the Bexar County Volleyball Academy Director since 1999, and has owned Ultimate Training and Fitness since 1995.

Prior to joining the Trinity staff in 2005, Fricke served for five years as Head Volleyball and Basketball Coach at San Antonio's St. Mary's Hall. She amassed a record of 136-33, and the Barons won two Southwest Preparatory Conference titles in 2002 and 2003, as well as finishing as runners-up in 2004. She was named the 2003 Honorable Mention Coach of the Year by lonestarvolleyball.com.

Fricke has also coached several summer league teams, including a U.S. 18-and-under team in Australia that placed first in 2003, a U.S. 18-and-under team in Italy that placed fourth in 2001, and an 18-and-under team in Hawaii in 2004.

Fricke also has some high school coaching experience under her belt, having served as Head Volleyball Coach at Bay City High School in Bay City, Texas, in 1999 and 2000, and Head Basketball Coach at Harlandale High School in San Antonio in 1998 and 1999, earning Coach of the Year honors from the San Antonio Express News. She was also the Assistant Volleyball Coach at Hondo High School in Hondo, Texas, in 1996 and 1997, and Assistant Volleyball Coach at Providence High School in San Antonio in 1995 and 1996.

Fricke is a 1995 graduate of St. Mary's University in San Antonio, where she received her B.A. in Exercise and Sports Science while playing varsity volleyball and basketball. She was inducted into the St. Mary's Hall of Fame in 2006, and her career honors include 1993 NAIA Volleyball District MVP and the 1993 NAIA Volleyball All-America Team.
