AROUND THE SCAC

Austin College had the weekend off. The ‘Roos will travel to San Antonio to take on Trinity on Nov. 15. The Tigers beat Austin 41-13 in last year's meeting.

Birmingham-Southern saw an historic week, playing on campus for the first time since 1939 at the new Panther Stadium, and hosting the school's first Homecoming football game. The Panthers picked up a decisive 49-0 victory over Sewanee in front of a crowd of 3,500+, including many alumni who were on campus for Homecoming & Reunion Weekend. BSC had probably its best performance of the season, picking up 295 yards on the ground and 210 passing yards, while allowing only 89 rushing yards and 50 passing yards from the Tigers. The Panthers are at home again this weekend to wrap up the season, facing No. 4 Millsaps at noon at Panther Stadium.

In the final home game for 11 seniors Centre upset #16 Trinity 26-17 on senior day to improve to 6-3 overall and 4-2 in the SCAC. The Colonels, which had not defeated Trinity since 2000, scored 13 points in the final eight seconds of the first half to take a 13-10 lead at the break. Centre added two more touchdowns in the second half and allowed only one Trinity score to complete the upset. The Colonels' defense extended its consecutive game streak of forcing at least one turnover to 40 games by intercepting a pass and recovering two fumbles. Centre will look to finish the season Saturday against Colorado. A win would give the Colonels their first seven win season since 2005.

Colorado College senior quarterback Jon McDonald needs 188 passing yards to become the sixth player in school history to throw for 3,000 or more yards in his career. With one year of eligibility remaining, he ranks sixth in passing yards and with 23 career touchdown passes. McDonald also has rushed for 1,114 yards and nine TDs. Senior running back Justin Alexander currently ranks third with 558 career carries and 2,366 rushing yards. He needs only 10 carries to break the school record held by John Lutz (1991-94). Three senior linebackers now rank among the top 15 in career solo and total tackles. Brian Mulhern is No. 9 with 236 total tackles, while Josh Underwood is tied for No. 11 with 226 and Buddy Ferreira is No. 14 with 206. Mulhern is No. 10 with 115 solo stops, while Underwood is No. 11 with 114 and Ferreira is No. 12 with 98. Junior defensive end Ian Rivero had four tackles for 16 lost yards and three sacks among his 11 stops during the last two games. Junior defensive end Ian Rivero climbed into sixth place with 27.5 career tackles for lost yards and into second place in career sacks with 18. His seven sacks this year places him in a tie for fourth on CC's single-season list. After forcing only three turnovers (two fumbles and one interception) during the first four games, Colorado College has forced 12 (six fumbles and six interceptions) during the last four.

DePauw wrapped up its 11th season of SCAC play with a 28-12 win and no worse than a second place finish. The Tigers jumped out to a 21-0 first-half lead and totaled 250 yards at the intermission, while allowing the Lynx just 81 and four first downs. Spud Dick paced the offensive attack with 32-of-38 passing for 318 yards and two touchdowns. In the first half alone, he completed 21 of 25 for 196 yards including 14 of 15 in the second quarter. He also completed 13 straight passes during the second and third quarters. After setting the school's career total offense record in the previous game at Austin, Dick broke DePauw's all-time passing yardage record of 6,035 held by Jeff Voris (1986-89). Dick's total now stands at 6,300. His top two targets, Bryan Mulligan and Alex Koors, each topped the 100-yard receiving plateau. Mulligan caught 11 for 118 yards and a score, while Koors hauled in nine for 124 yards and one touchdown. Jon Ellis carried the ball 25 times for 63 yards and two scores. The DePauw defense allowed the Lynx just 253 yards for its best performance since the second week of the season. DePauw, which finished the season with a perfect 5-0 record at Blackstock Stadium, concludes the season on the road in Crawfordsville, Ind., where they'll face Wabash College (2nd AFCA/3rd d3football.com) for the 115th time and 77th for possession of the Monon Bell. In a rivalry which dates back to 1890, Wabash leads the all-time series 53-52-9. DePauw holds a 36-34-6 edge in games played for the Monon Bell which entered the rivalry in 1932. The live, national telecast on HDNet begins at 1 p.m. with kickoff shortly after.

No. 4 Millsaps (9-0, 7-0 SCAC) won its 11th-straight game dating back to last season, just two away from the school record of 13 straight wins between the 1979-81 seasons, as they defeated conference-foe Colorado College 50-6.  Senior Eric McCarty became the fourth Millsaps receiver in school history to eclipse the 2,000-yard mark in his career and a balanced Major attack had 227 yards rushing and 222 yards passing as they clinched their first outright league title since the 2006 season.  A stingy Millsaps defense combined with fabulous special teams play set the tone from the opening quarter, with the Majors surrendering a season-best 170 total yards, holding the Tigers to 3-of-14 on third down and also blocking two punts and a field goal.  As a unit, the Majors defense gave up just 19 yards passing on 1-of-9 attempts and had 7.0 tackles-for-loss on the day, led by junior Lee Klein with 2.0 for minus 6-yards. Marcus Stokes, one of 20 football seniors honored prior to kickoff, had a team-high seven tackles while Will Hawkins had six and Jacob Hanberry and Jaren Bowser had five apiece. Offensively for Millsaps, Juan Joseph had a solid day by hitting on 20-of-25 passes for 222 yards and three TDs, connecting with Raymece Savage a team-high six times for 69 yards. Shane Bowser, Donnie Epps and Gary Davis all caught touchdown passes, while Chris Skinner had a career day on the ground with 76 yards and a score.  The Majors will close out the regular season this weekend on the road, traveling to SCAC-provisional member Birmingham-Southern. Kickoff is slated for a Noon start on the campus of BSC and can be watched on the internet courtesy of the Millsaps sports information department at www.atwsportscast.com.

Rhodes continues to lead the SCAC in several defensive categories. Sewanee traveled to Birmingham Saturday for the first time in 22 years (vs. Samford, 1986) to play Birmingham Southern in the newly constructed Panther Stadium and fell to the host Panthers 49-0 after trailing 30-0 at the half. Sewanee newcomer Zeke Wilson led Sewanee's offense with 41 yards rushing and Quarterbacks Brient Hobbs and Patrick Shelton passed for a combined 50 yards. Tyler Brantley led Sewanee's defense with nine tackles. The Tigers are 2-7 and are 1-5 in the SCAC. They will host Rhodes next weekend on the Mountain.

Trinity, previously ranked in the top 20 in both the AFCA and D3football.com national polls, lost its second straight game on Saturday. The Tigers dropped a 26-17 decision at Centre for the team's second loss, which was the first time Trinity's football team has lost back-to-back games since the 1995 season. The loss squandered a stellar performance from Tiger running back Chris Baer, who rushed 34 times for 187 yards in the game.  Baer also scored his team-best sixth rushing touchdown in the game, which came early in the fourth quarter to cut Centre's lead to 20-17 at the time. Also with a strong effort on Saturday was Tiger defensive lineman Ray Clark, who had six solo tackles total - including 4.0 tackles for a loss of 15 total yards. Trinity will take on Austin College in the regular season finale in San Antonio this Saturday.  The Tigers are 37-29-6 all-time against the Kangaroos - a series that dates back to the 1904 season.  Trinity has won 11 consecutive meetings, dating back to the 1993 season.
