Upsets rule on first day of 2009 SCAC Baseball Championship

JACKSON, Miss. - Behind a gutsy complete game performance from senior pitcher Jake Jones, the #3 East seeded Centre College Colonels upset fifth-ranked and #1 West seeded Millsaps College 4-2 to highlight the first day of the SCAC Championship. Jones scattered seven hits, struck out six and allowed just two earned runs in improving 4-2 on the season.

Earlier in the day, the #3 West seeded Hendrix College Warriors won its first SCAC tournament game since April 22, 1999, with a 10-7 upset of #1 East seeded DePauw University. The Warriors plated five runs in the first three innings and then tacked on four in the top of the ninth to out do the Tigers. DePauw's Justin Weiner became the school's career stolen bases leader with 87 swipes. He also tied the SCAC career mark as well. Hendrix tallied three players with mult-RBI games as Clark Sims, Nathan Harr and Brad Grinstead each drove in two runs.

In a matchup of the conference's two #2 seeds, it was the Trinity University Tigers' 21 hit attack that overmatched the Rhodes College Lynx 11-3. The 21 hits were three shy of tying an SCAC Championship single-game record. Trinity's Stosh Hoover hit a two run home run that cut Rhodes lead to 3-2 and the Tigers went on to score nine unanswered runs. Rhodes starting pitcher Andy Holt was roughed up as he allowed 12 hits, five runs (four earned), struck out four in just five innings. Trinity ace Evan Bronson left after just four innings due to inury. From there, three relievers combined to finish the job and allowed just two hits in the last five innings.

The game of the day was the final game of the day as Jones shutdown a powerful Millsaps offense. Centre third baseman Cory Crowdis went 1-for-3 with two runs batted in and drew a walk as the Colonels won an SCAC Championship game for the first time since April 26, 1996.
