SCAC Women's Basketball Recap - Week 11

Complete Release

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - Four weeks remain in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference women’s basketball season and Trinity has already secured its spot in the SCAC Basketball Tournament after moving to a perfect 10-0 record in league play as conference action continued last week.

The Tigers (15-2, 10-0) closed out a four game homestand by defeating Texas Lutheran (7-11, 5-6), 82-57, last Friday and Southwestern (5-13, 3-8), 70-38, on Saturday. Trinity has shot 50 percent or better from the field in three of its last four contests, including 51.6 percent (32-for-62) in the win over the Bulldogs. Abby Holland, who is currently riding a three-game streak of scoring 20 or more points, continued her standout senior season by combining for 47 points, 11 rebounds, nine steals and four assists in the two wins over the weekend.  Winners of their last 12 games, double-digit win streaks are nothing new for Coach Hill’s Tigers as this marks the fourth time in the last six years that Trinity has produced an in-season win streak of 10 or more games.

St. Thomas (14-4, 9-2) extended its winning streak to six after picking up a pair of road victories in Colorado over the weekend, defeating Johnson & Wales (3-13, 3-8), 84-48, on Friday and Colorado College, 86-82, on Saturday. Senior Sheridan Hopkins averaged a team-high 19.5 points per game, including sinking four critical free throws in the final 19 seconds to help preserve the win over CC. Hopkins also finished the weekend averaging seven rebounds a game.

Austin College (15-2, 8-2) and Dallas (3-14, 1-9) squared off for a home and home series last week as the ‘Roos won both games, first defeating the Crusaders, 78-53, in Irving on Tuesday before picking up an 84-40 victory Saturday in Sherman. Sophomore guard Natalie McCoy came off the bench for a pair of strong games, averaging a team-best 14.5 points per game on the strength of 66.7 percent shooting (10-for-15). She added 2.5 rebounds, 2.5 steals and 2.0 assists per game.

Colorado College (11-7, 7-4) split SCAC home contests last weekend, defeating Centenary (1-17, 1-10), 59-44, on Friday before falling to St. Thomas to close out the weekend on Saturday. The win over the Ladies saw the Tigers post a season-high eight blocks, led by six from Rosie Braley. McKenzee Gertz averaged a double-double with 16.5 points and 12 rebounds per game, which included a career-high 19 boards in the loss to St. Thomas.

Schreiner (8-9, 6-4) has won three in a row and four of its last five after collecting home wins against Southwestern, 74-62, on Friday and Texas Lutheran, 77-69, on Saturday. Freshman Zahra Cross was outstanding in the two wins, averaging 20.0 points (13-for-27), 4.0 assists, 3.5 rebounds and 3.0 steals per game. The win over Southwestern marked a season sweep for the Mountaineers, just the second time Schreiner has swept the season series against the Pirates since joining the SCAC. Schreiner also swept Southwestern during the 2016-17 season.

Johnson & Wales (3-13, 3-8) secured its third SCAC win of the season last weekend, defeating Centenary, 54-50, on Saturday behind an outstanding 27-point performance courtesy of sophomore Brianna Bailey. Bailey also added seven rebounds and two assists in the win.

SCAC women’s basketball action continues this week with five games scheduled on Friday and two games slated for both Saturday and Sunday, highlighted by Trinity squaring off against St. Thomas on Friday.
