SCAC Women's Basketball Recap - Week 6

Complete Release

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - It was another light week in SCAC Women’s Basketball action with just six contests scheduled as teams continued to wrapped up the semester and finish exams, highlighted by opening the league portion of the 2019-20 schedule as Southwestern traveled through Colorado to take on the CC Tigers and Johnson & Wales.

Colorado College (5-3, 1-0) has now won five-straight contests after defeating Southwestern, 71-66, last Saturday at home to open up SCAC play. It’s the longest such streak since the Tigers won five in a row back in the 2009-10 season. The win also marks the fifth-straight year that CC has picked up a win in its conference opener. Senior Jordan Meltzer scored a team-high 20 points in the win including seven in the final 3:08 to help secure the victory for the Tigers. Freshman Rosie Braley grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds to go along with her seven points. CC hit a season-high 11 three-point field goals in the win. Southwestern’s Cecily Woolfolk posted a double-double, her fifth of the season, with 13 points and 10 rebounds in the loss.

Southwestern (3-6, 1-1) bounced back from Saturday’s loss to defeat Johnson & Wales (0-6, 0-1), 66-57, on Sunday. The Pirates committed their fewest turnovers of the season in the win. Woolfolk led the way once again for Southwestern, scoring 25 points on 9-for-17 shooting and grabbing nine rebounds, narrowly missing out on another double-double. It was the fifth time in her career she has poured in 25 or more points in a single game. Junior forward Noel Pratts added 20 points, her second-straight game scoring 20 or more for the Pirates. Brianna Bailey led a Wildcats team that saw four of its five starters in double figures with 15 points and 10 rebounds to collect her first double-double of the season.

Austin College (6-0) is perfect through its opening six contests for the first time in the SCAC era, going back to the 2006-07 season after defeating Ozarks (Ark.), 80-61, on Saturday. The ‘Roos led wire-to-wire, jumping out to a 20-8 lead in the opening quarter, and shot a season-best 48.4 percent from the field. Austin College dished out 20 assists on 31 made field goals. Kacie West led AC with 14 points and added five rebounds, two assists and two steals, while Ally Longaker grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds.

In a game the Bulldogs never trailed, Texas Lutheran (2-5) secured its second-straight victory last Saturday, knocking off Sul Ross State, 83-80. TLU hit a season-high 13 three pointers, dished out a season-best 19 assists, and committed fewer turnovers than assists for the first time this year. Dominique Campos scored a team-high 23 points on 4-for-6 shooting from behind the arc and grabbed three rebounds, while Tara Molina dished out nine assists without committing a turnover to push TLU to victory.

The final two games on the slate from last week, saw Trinity (3-2) fall to Texas-Dallas, 72-68, and Centenary (0-7) drop a non-conference decision against Mississippi University for Women, 61-50, for the second time this season.
