SCAC Women's Basketball Recap - Week 8

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - It was a busy holiday break as all 10 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference women’s basketball teams were in action, highlighted by two squads opening the conference portion of their schedules and Austin College and Trinity remaining perfect in league play.

Austin College (11-0, 4-0) remained perfect on the season after posting a 3-0 record over the break that included a statement win over No. 5 Mary Hardin-Baylor, 70-61, on December 30th. In the win, the ‘Roos led wire-to-wire, pushing the margin to as many as 17 points and finished with four players in double-figures led by junior Reagan Chiaverini with 16. Austin College then returned to conference play last weekend, traveling to Colorado to secure victories against Colorado College, 77-69, last Friday and defeating Johnson & Wales, 88-57, on Saturday. Chiaverini finished the break averaging 13.7 points per game on 50 percent shooting (15-for-30) and securing 5.3 rebounds per contest. This season marks the third consecutive year that Austin College has opened league play with a 4-0 record.

Trinity (9-2, 4-0) has now stacked six wins in a row after a perfect 4-0 mark against league opponents in the span of seven days. The Tigers opened up SCAC play on the road to close out 2019 with wins over Texas Lutheran, 60-51, on December 29th and Southwestern (3-9, 1-4), 84-51, on December 30th. Trinity then opened the 2020 portion of its schedule with home wins against St. Thomas, 82-58, last Friday and Centenary (0-13, 0-6), 110-58, on Saturday. The 110 points against the Ladies marked the fifth time during the Cameron Hill era the Tigers have hit the century line in points scored. Trinity is 4-1 when scoring 100 or more points under Coach Hill. Senior Abby Holland averaged 18.8 points, 7.3 rebounds, 3.0 assists, and 3.0 steals per game for the break, despite playing an average of just 25.5 minutes per contest. She shot 59.3 percent (32-54) from the field for the four games as well.

St. Thomas (9-4, 4-2) has now won three of its last four picking up SCAC wins against Johnson & Wales (80-65) and Colorado College (74-72) at home before earning a victory at Schreiner (77-58) last Saturday to close out the holiday break. The Celts dished a season-high 21 assists in the win over the Wildcats and followed that up with season-high marks in both rebounds (53) and blocks (9) in the victory against the Mountaineers. Senior forward Bresha Orange scored in double-figures in all four of St. Thomas’ during the break, averaging 14.3 points, 4.5 rebounds and 2.0 assists per contest.

Colorado College (8-5, 4-2) split four SCAC contests with book end victories, first extending its win streak to seven after defeating Centenary on the road, 81-46, before closing out the break with a 78-49 win at home against Dallas (3-9, 1-3). The Tigers have shot 40 percent or better from the field in five consecutive games and dished out a season-high 28 assists in the win over the Crusaders. Junior forward McKenzee Gertz led the way for CC averaging a double-double in four games with 19.5 points and 108 rebounds per contest.

Texas Lutheran (5-7, 2-1) has now won five of its last seven contests after posting a 2-1 record over the break against SCAC opponents. After falling to Trinity, the Bulldogs rattled off wins against Schreiner, 67-57, to close out 2019 and opened 2020 with a tight 60-57 victory over Southwestern last Friday. Sophomore Morgan Rodriguez paced TLU averaging 15.7 points and 5.7 rebounds by shooting 63.3 percent from the field.

Schreiner (4-7, 2-2) went 2-2 over the break and have now won four of its last six games after defeating Southwestern, 65-62, on December 29th. The win over the Pirates marked the third-straight for Schreiner, the first three-game win streak since the 2017-18 season. The Mountaineers then opened the 2020 portion of their schedule by earning a road victory over Centenary, 68-62, last Friday. Sydney Williams paced Schreiner in scoring in three of the four contests during the break including a season-high 24 points in the win over the Ladies.

Johnson & Wales (2-9, 2-2) snapped its eight-game skid to open the season by posting back-to-back wins in conference play for the first time since joining the SCAC. The Wildcats defeated Centenary on the road, 58-54, and then secured their first home conference victory in the SCAC era last Friday with a 75-54 triumph over Dallas. The win over Dallas saw Johnson & Wales set season-highs for points (75), three-point field goals made (16), three-point field goal percentage (42.1), assists (21) and steals (15). Sophomore Katey Guzman led the way for JWU averaging 18.5 points and 7.8 rebounds per game.

SCAC action continues this week, with five games scheduled on Friday and two games scheduled on both Saturday and Sunday.
