LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - The 2019-20 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Women’s Basketball season tipped off last week with eight schools in action as the league combined to secure just two wins and posted a cumulative record of 2-10 in the opening weekend of play.
Austin College won its opener for the second consecutive season after the ‘Roos secured a 89-79 victory over former SCAC foe Rhodes last Sunday at home. All five starters finished the night in double-figures, led by junior Kacie West with 21 points. Senior Ann Savage finished with 15 points, seven assists and three rebounds, while junior Reagan Chiaverini led the ‘Roos with eight rebounds to go along with 14 points. Defensively Austin College forced 28 turnovers which led to 31 points.
Trinity hosted the Together Tigers Tournament that featured a pair of nationally ranked teams. The Tigers opened the weekend with an impressive 74-55 victory over eighth-ranked George Fox on Saturday that saw Trinity lead by 17 at the half. Freshman Ashlyn Milton came off the bench to pour in a game-high 18 points on 4-for-6 from three-point land and added three rebounds, two steals and one assist. As a team the Tigers connected on 42.9 percent (12-28) from deep and held George Fox to just 16.7 percent shooting from three. Trinity has now won two-straight openers and four of its last five. On Sunday, Trinity squared off against ninth-ranked St. Thomas (Minn.) and led by nine points going into the fourth quarter of a game that featured 26 lead changes but ultimately couldn’t hang on for the win, falling 71-68. Senior Abby Holland scored a season-high 22 in the loss and Milton finished in double figures for the second night with 10 points.
Centenary, Colorado College and Johnson & Wales all opened the season by dropping their first contest, while Schreiner, Southwestern and Texas Lutheran all began the year with 0-2 records.
SCAC Women’s Basketball continues this week as Dallas opens it season on Tuesday night when they host LeTourneau and St. Thomas gets its inaugural season in NCAA Div. III action when they host Louisiana College on Friday night.
Milton opened her college career by leading Trinity to a 1-1 record at the Together Tigers Tournament over the weekend, scoring in double figures in a pair of contests against top-10 teams in the national. On opening night against No. 8 George Fox, Milton came off the bench and made a huge splash in her collegiate debut, hitting 7-for-11 from the field and 4-for-6 from three-point range on her way to 18 points in Trinity's 74-55 win over the Bruins. She also added three rebounds, two steals and one assist in the win. The rookie would follow that performance with 10 points on 3-for-5 shooting against No. 9 St. Thomas (Minn.) the following night.
