KERRVILLE, Texas - Behind a career-high 23-point performance from junior Abby Hroch, fifth-seeded Texas Lutheran University pulled away late and defeated fourth-seeded Schriener University, 73-61, in SCAC women's quarterfinal tournament play Friday evening on the campus of Schreiner. The game featured 10 lead changes and Texas Lutheran had to withstand two fourth-quarter Schreiner runs to earn the victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Schreiner led 16-15 after a first period when neither team shot the ball particularly well. TLU managed 35.3 percent (6-17) from the field while Schreiner was at 33.3 percent (5-15).
- TLU took a 29-26 lead into the locker room, although both teams continued to struggle from the field. TLU managed 31.3 percent (5-16) for the period while Schriener was at 29.4 percent (5-17).
- Both offenses came alive in the third quarter as TLU extended its lead to seven (47-40) after outscoring the Mountaineers 26-21 in the stanza. The Bulldogs hit on 57.1 percent of their shots (8-14) in the third.
- TLU tried to pull away twice in the fourth quarter - taking a 50-42 lead only to see Schreiner close to gap to 52-51 with 7:16 remaining. The Bulldogs answerd with a 6-0 run to pull out to a 58-51 lead but the Mountaineers countered once more to tie the game at 58-58 with 4:43 remaining. Olivia Balderas hit a three-pointer for TLU on the team's next possession and the Bulldogs scored the next 11 points to put the game away.

NOTABLES
- Texas Lutheran advances to the semifinal round for the sixth time in the last seven years.
- The fifth seed has defeated the four seed each of the last two years.
- It was the second consecutive year TLU and Schreiner have met in the first round of the tournament. TLU took the 66-41 victory a year ago. The two also met in the semifinal round in 2014.
- The win gave TLU head coach Mel Dixon him his program-record 122nd win with the Bulldogs. Dixon moved past Lana Urbanek as the career wins leader in TLU women's basketball history.
- Schreiner ends its season with a 12-14 record.
