SCAC Women's Basketball Recap - Week 12

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. -Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference women’s basketball continued as the calendar turned to February, with three more squads punching their ticket to the SCAC Tournament as Austin College, Schreiner and Colorado College all qualified following successful weekends.

Trinity (16-3, 11-1) remained a top the league standings despite seeing its 12-game winning streak snapped Friday night with a loss to St. Thomas, 83-81, on the road. The Tigers responded in convincing fashion, defeating Centenary (1-19, 1-12), 100-25, on Sunday. Four different Tigers finished in double-figures against the Ladies, led by senior Abby Holland who poured in 18 points and added six rebounds and five steals in the win.

Austin College (17-2, 10-2) extended its winning streak to five after defeating Colorado College, 64-61, on Friday night and Johnson & Wales, 90-48, on Saturday afternoon. The ‘Roos, who have posted double-digit steals in three of their last four games, finished with 11 in the win over JWU. Austin College, which qualified for the SCAC Tournament after last weekends results, has now post ten or more wins in conference play for five consecutive seasons.

St. Thomas (15-5, 10-3) split a pair of SCAC home contests last weekend, defeating Trinity, 83-81, to extend its win streak to seven on Friday night before falling to Schreiner on Sunday. Against Trinity, Sheridan Hopkins finished with a game-high 29 points and Bresha Orange poured in 22 of her own to help lead the Celts to victory.

Schreiner (10-9, 8-4) extended its win streak to five games after posting a weekend conference road sweep for the first time since the 2016-17 season after defeating Centenary, 65-50, on Friday and St. Thomas, 88-82, on Sunday. The five-game win streak is the longest in Coach Davison’s career at Schreiner and is the longest since Schreiner posted a five-game winning streak back in that same 2016-17 season. Freshman Zahra Cross continued her outstanding year, averaging 18.5 points and four rebounds per game to lead the Mountaineers.

Colorado College (12-8, 8-5) split SCAC road contests last weekend, falling to Austin College on Friday before bouncing back to defeat Dallas (3-16, 1-11), 70-52, on Saturday. Four Tigers registered double figures in the win over the Crusaders, led by junior McKenzee Gertz who finished with 17 points, eight rebounds and three assists.

Southwestern (6-13, 4-8) defeated Texas Lutheran (7-12, 5-7) 56-50 at home last Friday to even up the season series at one game apiece at the two teams closed out the month of January. The Pirates, who have now won three of their last five contests, was led by Cecily Woolfolk’s 20 points, 13 rebounds and five assists.

Johnson & Wales (4-14, 4-9) earned a 48-44 road win over Dallas last Friday to double its win total from a season ago. Three of the Wildcats’ five starters finished the night win double figures, led by Katey Guzman’s 15 points.

SCAC women’s basketball action continues this week with five games scheduled on Friday and four games slated for Saturday, highlighted by Austin College visiting Schreiner and Trinity over the weekend.
