LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - It was a busy week in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference women’s basketball with all 10 teams in action highlighted by Colorado College, Southwestern and Dallas all earning their first wins of the season as teams prepare for the Thanksgiving holiday.
Austin College (2-0) returned to the hardwood with a decisive, 95-53, road victory over former SCAC foe Hendrix last Saturday afternoon. The ‘Roos shot 40.0 percent from three (12-for-30) and held the Warriors to just 31.7 percent from the field, 17.6 percent from three on their way to victory. Junior Kacie West posted her third best scoring output in her career, leading Austin College with 23 points on 7-for-12 shooting. Austin College also got to the free throw line 36 times, connecting on 27 attempts.
Trinity (3-1) hit the road for the first time this season and secured a nine-point, 69-69, win against East Texas Baptist on Saturday night. It was the second time this season the Tigers have connected on 10 or more buckets from distance, going 10-for-25 from three-point range. Three of Trinity’s five starters registered in double-figures led by senior Abby Holland with 20 points to go along with 10 rebounds for her first double-double of the season and the third consecutive game she has scored 20 or more.
St. Thomas (3-2) split a pair of contests last week, opening with a 100-95 win against Arlington Baptist on Tuesday before falling to Mary Hardin-Baylor in overtime on Friday. The 100 points scored in the win over the Patriots marked the first time an SCAC squad has reached the century mark since Trinity scored 100 in a win back on January 30th, 2015. Sheridan Hopkins scored a season-high 37 points against Arlington Baptist; it was the second time this season she has scored 30 or more points.
Colorado College (2-3) picked up its first victories of the season last weekend, defeating Nebraska Wesleyan, 88-70, at home on Friday and turned around to clip Denison, 62-53, on Saturday. The win over the Prairie Wolves marked the high-water mark for points and the best shooting performance of the season for the Tigers connecting on 47.7 percent of their shots (31-for-65). Against the Big Red, CC limited Denison to its lowest field goal percentage of the season, holding them to just 31.3 percent from the field (20-for-64). Junior McKenzee Gertz led the way for the Tigers, averaging 24 points, nine rebounds and 2.5 assists per game, that included a 5-for-10 performance from three against Nebraska Wesleyan.
Southwestern (2-3) posted a perfect 2-0 mark last week, defeating Concordia (TX) on Tuesday at home, 63-56, then got an Emma Lewis free throw with two seconds left to defeat Howard Payne, 65-64, on Saturday afternoon. Senior Cecily Woolfolk averaged 18.5 points on 48.1 percent shooting and 12 rebounds per game, posting her third and fourth double-doubles of the season. She also added five blocks, including four against Concordia (TX).
Dallas (1-2) secured its first win of the year and the first under head coach Bri Calver last Tuesday, 66-40, over Southwestern Adventist. The Crusaders finished the night with four of their starters in double-figures led by Gracie Williams with 15 points. Jules Oliveti posted a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds.
SCAC Women’s Basketball continues this week through the Thanksgiving Holiday with three games scheduled Tuesday, two on Friday, seven on Saturday and three more on Sunday.
